One of our very first rams, Jonas enjoys his role as chief cuddler. These days he’s not working. He is happy soaking up attention, leaning in for scratches, and gently looking after anyone willing to stop for a pat.

For all his size he’s always been a softie at heart.

How the UK Evaluates Valais Blacknose
(From what we have gathered from afar)

In the United Kingdom, Valais Blacknose sheep are evaluated through both grading and showing, with each serving a clear and complementary purpose.

Grading remains essential for assessing sheep against the breed standard. It focuses on:
• Structure and balance
• Soundness and movement
• Correct markings
• Overall breed correctness

This ensures sheep meet the requirements needed to protect long-term breed quality.

The Role of Shows in the UK

Alongside grading, the UK also utilizes shows as an educational and promotional tool.

Shows allow breeders to:
• See sheep evaluated side by side
• Learn how the written standard is applied in practice
• Compare structure, markings, and type across animals
• Engage in discussion and mentorship with experienced breeders and judges

Rather than replacing grading, shows help reinforce grading principles in a public, accessible setting.

A System Built on Education and Experience

UK judges and graders are not appointed casually.

Becoming a judge or grader requires:
• Years of experience as an active breeder
• Deep familiarity with the breed standard
• Ongoing education
• Regular travel to Switzerland to learn directly from the breed’s origin

This commitment is what allows grading and shows to work together effectively.

One Goal, Two Tools

Grading provides structure and accountability.
Shows provide education and visibility.

Together, they help protect breed quality while supporting a growing population.
