🌾🐾 We recently had the pleasure of hosting final-year vet student Leah from James Cook University, and what an absolute legend she was!

Leah jumped right into the country clinic life—whether it was wrangling cattle, consulting furry friends, or lending a hand in surgery, she tackled it all with skill, enthusiasm, and a big smile!

Fun fact: Leah and our very own Dr Ben met at uni in Townsville and even played footy at the same club 🏉 Go Hawks!

Leah, it was truly a joy having you with us. We hope you’ve learnt loads (and maybe picked up a few classic country quirks along the way). Wishing you all the best as you finish your degree—you’re going to be an amazing vet!

Meet Benson, the King Charles Cavalier 🐶👑 true to his breed, he’s the king of the castle at home! A cheeky, lovable, and smoochy boy, Benson recently visited us for a routine appointment to have his a**l glands expressed.

During his check-up, we discovered one of his a**l glands was significantly enlarged. To prevent it from rupturing spontaneously or during expression, surgery was scheduled to remove it safely.

Once in surgery, Dr. Ben identified an a**l sac adenoma — a typically benign tumour found in dogs' a**l sacs. It was successfully removed along with the affected gland. Thanks to Benson’s dedicated owners keeping up with regular vet visits, we caught it early! Left untreated, this condition can lead to complications like hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), kidney failure, and, in rare malignant cases, metastasis to other organs — potentially shortening a dog’s lifespan and quality of life. The tumor can also cause discomfort and difficulty 💩💩

We’re thrilled to report that Benson made a swift recovery and was back home the same afternoon — already his cheeky self again with normal, happy bowel movements!

You're always welcome back at the clinic, Benson! We adore you 🤎

What else would you rather be doing on a rainy public holiday?
Thankfully this big boy was super chilled and quite amenable to being taken into the alcove to finish his X-rays out of the rain.
Well behaved AND handsome.

We hope everyone is enjoying their ANZAC day.
Lest we forget.

🐶🍫 Attention, pet parents! As Easter approaches, let’s talk about a potentially dangerous treat: chocolate! While we enjoy our holiday goodies, it’s crucial to remember that chocolate can be toxic to our furry friends.

Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

1. **Theobromine Toxicity**
Dogs metabolize theobromine, a compound found in chocolate, much slower than humans. Even small amounts can cause serious health issues.

2. **Symptoms to Watch For**
If your dog consumes chocolate, be on the lookout for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures. If you notice any of these, contact us immediately!

3. **Keep Chocolate Out of Reach**

4. **Chocolate Toxicity Calculator**
https://vetcalculators.com/chocolate.html
We understand accidents happen, if your dog accidentally consumes chocolate use this handy tool to calculate if your dog has had a toxic dose.

Let’s keep our furry friends safe this Easter! 🐾🤎 If you have any concerns or if your dog accidentally eats chocolate, please reach out to Rhodes vet clinic right away. Happy Easter! 🐣🐰✨

Meet the staff Monday 👋🏼

Introducing Dr Ness 👩🏽‍⚕️

Ness grew up on a sheep and cropping farm near Lismore where she always had a menagerie of animals, so it was only natural that she pursued a career in Veterinary Science.

Ness graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2012. She has over 12 years’ experience as a mixed practice vet and loves all aspects of working in a rural mixed practice. She particularly enjoys working with production animals and small animal surgery.

Outside of work hours Ness is often out competing on her horses, running with her German Short Haired Pointer and taking care of her busy little toddler.

Shall I make a Dr Mike one too? Bow tie, sausage dog in arms and an after work glass of wine would have to be included 😂

At our clinic, we know our team truly loves what they do — even if it means getting covered in a little (or alot) of 💩💩 along the way!

Here's Dr. Ben in action, pregnancy testing a local cow at a nearby farm 🐄
Dr. Ben uses both manual palpation and ultrasound (the small black device attached to his head) to determine pregnancy. Ultrasound is most effective between 5-16 weeks, but remains a valuable diagnostic tool beyond that window. With these techniques, he can accurately assess how far along a cow is or if she is not pregnant.

This process is crucial for farmers, especially during calving season, as it helps them predict the number of calves they can expect and when.
Dr. Ben has a genuine passion for large animal medicine and a soft spot for cows. With over 14 years of experience milking cows in the Colac area prior to his veterinary studies, he’s always eager to help — whether it's an early morning or a late night calving!

Call our clinic today to schedule your next round of pregnancy testing! 🐄
