Over the last couple of days, the team at Colac Vet Clinic undertook an intensive in-house two-day training course with the amazing Maggie Burley from IM3, leaders in veterinary dentistry. 🦷🐾

Over the two days, we learnt all things dental — from understanding that by age 2, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats already show signs of dental disease, to recognising the huge impact oral health has on our pets’ overall wellbeing and quality of life.

We have enhanced our expertise in performing dental X-rays and techniques, refined our skills in professional scaling and polishing, and elevated our standards in proper dental instrument care and use, among many other advancements.

Most importantly, we learnt advanced techniques and skills focused on saving teeth wherever possible, helping pets keep healthy, functional teeth for longer and improving their long-term quality of life. 💕

So if you lift up your dog’s gums and notice tartar building up, now is the time to act! Early intervention can make a huge difference in saving your dog’s teeth in the future. Get in touch with our team — we’d love to help keep your pet’s smile healthy. 🐶🦷

Meet Our Trainee Veterinary Nurse Siena 💕

Hi there, my name is Siena.
I’m a trainee Veterinary Nurse here at Colac Vet Clinic, It’s been my dream ever since I could remember to work with animals and since starting at Colac Vets, it’s everything I could have imagined. I have a real interest in anything animal related but specifically animal behaviour.

Your favourite dog breed is and why?
It would have to be a Rottweiler (definitely not bias lol) I love their loyalty and kind nature.

My favourite food is?
Love a good Parma and chips.

My favourite product in the clinic is?
Would have to be the Pablo and co range.

My dream holiday destination is?
Africa or Japan.

Favourite outside of work activity?
I love taking Darla out for a walk, riding my horse, camping, fishing and spending time with my partner and family.

🦷 What actually happens during your pet’s dental procedure? 🦷

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at Lily’s dental procedure with Dr. Lin and Nurse Rory 💙

🩸 Step 1: Pre-anaesthetic blood tests
Before her procedure, Lily had pre-anaesthetic bloods to ensure her organs were functioning well and that it was safe for her to undergo anaesthesia. This helps us to tailor each anaesthetic to the individual patient and maximise safety.

💤 Step 2: General anaesthetic
Lily then went under a general anaesthetic, allowing us to perform a thorough, pain-free dental procedure while closely monitoring her the entire time.

🔍 Step 3: Dental X-rays
With the help of our new dental X-ray machine, we were able to assess what was happening below the gum line.

Dental X-rays are a game-changer!!! They allow us to detect hidden disease, assess tooth roots, and make informed decisions before moving ahead. In Lily’s case, the X-rays gave her the all-clear for no extractions 🙌

🪥 Step 4: Scale & polish
Once she got the all clear, we performed a full scale and polish to remove plaque and tartar, leaving Lily’s teeth clean, smooth, and sparkling ✨
The before and after speaks for itself!

💡 Why do dental X-rays matter?
Up to 60% of dental disease sits below the gum line, meaning a healthy-looking mouth doesn’t always tell the full story. Dental X-rays help us provide safer, more thorough, and more tailored dental care for your pets.
Lily was an absolute superstar, and we’re so happy with her result 🐶💙

How adorable is Doug 🥹
Doug is a Swiss Shepherd who stayed the day with us for a routine procedure, and as you can see, he loved having his photo taken.
Definitely knew how to find all his right angles… and stole all of our hearts in the process 🐾

A not-so-great beach souvenir 🎣🐶

This cheeky pup came in after swallowing a fish hook, with fishing line hanging from their mouth. X-rays confirmed the hook was sitting in the stomach, so we took them to surgery to safely remove it.

The hook was successfully removed, and they’re now recovering with pain relief, antibiotics, and lots of TLC.

A good reminder to keep a close eye on curious noses at the beach 💙

With summer here and a few hot days ahead of us, remember that animals and livestock feel the heat too. Heat stroke can be fatal.

To help animals cope during hot weather:
• Provide constant access to fresh, cool, clean water
• Ensure adequate shade at all times
• Never leave dogs in parked vehicles
• Limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day
• Fans or ventilation where appropriate to help cool

Animals more at risk include long-haired breeds, young and senior animals, and short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds.

Signs of heat stress include:
• Lethargy and staggering
• Vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Bright red tongue and gums, which may turn grey as shock develops
• Heavy panting, difficulty breathing and excessive thirst

If you notice any signs of heat stress in your animals, please contact us straight away on 52321792, or get in touch if you have any questions, we are happy to help 🐾
