Coburg Aquarium

Coburg Aquarium Coburg Aquarium is the largest leading aquarium in Australia. Coburg Aquarium is a family business that has been in operation for over 30 years.

Starting locally in Coburg in the 1970s by the Long family, Coburg Aquarium has grown into Australia’s premier Aquarium store. While Coburg Aquarium, was purchased by the Kirby family in 2007, we have retained most of the staff, processes and customer service values that the Long family instilled into the business over many years.

Fancy goldfish aren’t the fastest swimmers.

That means they can easily miss out at feeding time.

Pair them with fish that have a similar swimming and feeding speed.

Fast, competitive feeders can quickly outcompete them.

Make sure everyone gets their fair share!

👉 We are feeding: Hikari Lionhead | Mini Pellets
👉 Fish are: Fancy Goldfish | Oranda Goldfish

WE GET ASKED THIS EVERY WEEK…
💧 “My pH is wrong. How do I fix it?”

The short answer is: don’t chase the number!

Your fish need a stable, suitable pH, not necessarily the “perfect” number you found online. That's why you'll often see a pH range, rather than a specific number.

Things like KH (carbonate hardness), GH, your tap water and your substrate/decorations can all influence where your pH naturally sits and how stable it is.

So what should you do?
1️⃣ Test your aquarium water AND your tap water.
The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is a great all-rounder for freshwater tanks, measuring pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

2️⃣ Work out what your fish actually need.
Is it too high, is it too low?
Driftwood in the aquarium naturally lowers pH (softer conditions), aragonite/limestone increases pH (Harder conditions), these decorations are excellent when used to buffer conditions appropriately.

3️⃣ If adjustment is genuinely needed, make changes SLOWLY
Large, sudden pH changes can stress fish. Small, gradual adjustments are the name of the game. Aim for adjustments over a number of days.

Need help? Bring us your test results or a sample of water - we’ll help you find the cause, not just treat the symptom. 🐟

How do you manage pH in your aquarium?

🐟 We get asked this every week… Why are my fish hiding?

Hiding can be a sign of stress, with common causes including poor water quality, overcrowding, aggressive tank mates or sudden changes.

However, some fish are naturally shy. Corydoras, Kuhli Loaches, Apistogramma and many Plecos may spend more time hiding, especially when first introduced to a new aquarium.

Some species also prefer dimmer lighting and may become more active once the aquarium lights are lowered.

Providing plants, caves and other cover gives fish a safe place to retreat. If hiding is sudden or unusual, check your water parameters and tank mates to rule out an underlying issue, and consider upgrading your lighting to adjustable and dimmable LED options.
