Etiquette Pt 2

Following part 1 for our canine friends, we would like to share some tips to keep our feline friends as calm as possible. We know emotions are usually ALWAYS high for them, so here are some tips to keep things smooth (we can always try!):

▪️ Keep your cat in a secure carrier at all times. This is a biggie! Cats need a safe space to retreat and need to be kept safe, as you never know who you might encounter when you enter the building.

▪️ Covering the carrier with a light towel or throw can help them feel safe. Feliway Spray can easily be applied to that as well.

▪️ Place the carrier on a seat or your lap — not on the floor where curious dogs might wander by. Cats also like have a vantage point, so the higher the better for them.

▪️ We usually always take cats straight into a room, but that may not always be possible. Please always let us know if there is something we can do for you or your cat to make the visit a little smoother.

Thank you for helping us make the clinic a calmer space for every visitor.

Etiquette

As you all know, we love every pet that comes through our door. But not every pet feels that way about us, so we wanted to post a little reminder about waiting room etiquette to ensure a safe and calm environment for pets and owners.

✔️ all dogs must be on a lead at all times. If you have arrived without one, please let us know, we will get you a very cool BSVH one.

✔️ Please keep a respectful distance from all other pets and clients, in particular when it comes to different species. Although we always aim to keep cats and dogs separate, we would appreciate no sniff - attacks.

✔️ Avoid allowing pets to greet each other. We often see happy wagging tails that can turn into a little bit of a tiff. Emotions are swirling and your pet may not react the same way they usually would in a non-stressful situation.

✔️ Last but not least, we are here to help. If you or your pet isn't comfortable for any reason, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Halloween 🎃

The spookiest of nights is here. In previous years we have always shared the potential dangers around Halloween and certain foods, so we thought this year we would share some yummy treats that pets can have containing pumpkin.

Pumpkin provides health benefits for dogs due to its high fiber and vitamin content, which supports digestive health by easing both constipation and diarrhea. It is also a source of vitamins A, C, and E, which boost the immune system, support eye health, and maintain healthy skin and coat. Additionally, its low-calorie, low-fat, high-water content and antioxidants can aid with weight management and overall wellness.

Here are some fun and easy ideas for your pup:

🎃 Pumpkin & peanut butter bites (ensure the PB is xylitol free!)
🎃 Frozen pumpkin pops with greek yoghurt & banana
🎃 Pumpkin oats chews with egg

Just ensure that your dog doesn't ingest any pumpkin seeds or rind, as they can potentially cause a chocking and digestion hazard.

Happy Halloween! 👻

Cookie

This is the sweet Cookie. She is sadly a regular at our clinic as Cookie suffers from a disease called Copper Storage Disease or Copper Hepatopathy.

Copper storage disease is a condition in which excess copper accumulates in the liver, causing inflammation, damage, and potentially leading to liver failure. It can be caused by genetic defects that prevent the body from properly eliminating copper, or by excessive dietary intake. So Cookie is on a very strict diet.

When she comes in, we have her favourite snack ready - apples 🍎 We usually manage to find one around the kitchen, otherwise we have been known to raid the staff lunches (Sorry Dr. Neil).

She has learnt to wait for a command to eat (to ensure the snack is safe for her) - what an impressive skill to teach a Labrador! She waits for her Yum-Yum command before devouring her apple slices.

She is the bestest and happiest girl and we look forward to seeing her. With dietry regulations and regular blood tests she is currently doing very well.

Eat up Cookie (but no cookies for her)

This is one of the most common wildlife-related call we get. It can be tricky to determine whether a baby is in need of help or learning the ropes. Wildlife Victoria has put together some slides that may be useful.

Did you know?🐈

We sometimes have cats come in to see us and they are purring when they arrive. Purring is usually associated with a happy state of mind, but in some circumstances (especially regarding a trip to the vets), it can mean something very different.

Cats also purr when they are stressed, in pain, or even hungry. Purring can be a self-soothing mechanism, releasing endorphins to help calm a cat during a negative experience, similar to how a human might hum when nervous or moan when in pain.

Unfortunately it's not usually happy purring when cats come to see us, but we are lucky to have had the occasional patients purr with happiness.
