🐾 Mind-Blowing Dog Fact! 🐶
Did you know dogs have been shown to read human emotions better than any other animal? 😲
They can tell if you’re happy, sad, stressed, or even pretending! Next time your dog stares at you for no reason, they might actually get what you’re feeling.
💬 Comment with what your dog “reads” best about you!

🐾 Why don’t dogs like having their paws touched? 🐾

If your dog pulls away, freezes or growls when you touch their paws, they are not being naughty. This is very common.

Here’s why 👇

• Paws are extremely sensitive and full of nerve endings
• Touch can trigger a natural protective reflex
• Past pain or negative experiences like nail trims can linger
• Having a leg held can feel scary and out of control
• Some dogs were not gently handled as puppies

🐶 Subtle signs matter
Lip licking, head turning, tensing or freezing are early stress signals

💛 What helps
Go slowly, use high-value rewards and never force paw handling
If tolerance suddenly changes, pain should always be ruled out

Understanding this builds trust and keeps everyone safe.

🐾 Watch for the whispers before the shout 🐾

Dogs rarely “snap out of nowhere”.
They whisper first.

Those whispers might look like:
• Lip licking
• Turning the head away
• Freezing or stiffening
• Yawning when not tired
• Avoiding eye contact

When these signs are missed or ignored, dogs are forced to shout.
Growling, snapping or biting is communication, not misbehaviour.

💛 What helps
Pause, create space and listen to the early signals
Respecting the whisper prevents the shout and keeps everyone safe.

Understanding body language builds trust and reduces bites.

🐶 Why Does My Dog Really Do That? 🐾

Your dog stares at you like they understand everything. They tilt their head when you talk. They spin in circles before lying down. 🌀

These aren’t random quirks; they’re your dog’s way of communicating, coping with stress, or expressing excitement!

✨ Fun Fact: Dogs shake off tension just like humans stretch after a stressful moment. That adorable shake isn’t just cute, it’s healthy!

Next time your pup does something weird, pay attention—they’re trying to tell you something.

The Barkitecture movement has arrived.

Have you seen this trend taking over home design? Built-in pet suites are now a thing, tailored little spaces just for our four-legged family members, right inside the home 🐾💛. From cosy nooks under the stairs to custom beds, feeding stations and even mudroom wash zones, designers are blending pet comfort with beautiful interior design. It’s all part of the “barkitecture” movement, where pets are fully included in how we plan and live in our homes.

Whether you’re renovating or love clever ideas, these suites give pets their own space that still feels part of the home. Have you added a special pet space in your house? Share a photo! 📸

🛏️ Why Dogs Sleep in Different Positions 🐾

Ever notice your dog curling up like a doughnut one night, then sprawling on their side the next? Their sleep positions can tell us a lot about how they feel!

🌟 What Their Positions Mean:

Curled-Up Ball: Feeling cosy, protective, or a little insecure

Side Sleeping: Relaxed and happy

Belly-Up: Totally comfortable and trusting

Sphinx: Resting but alert

⚠️ Watch for Changes:
Sudden shifts to protective or tense postures, reluctance to stretch, or restless nights can signal discomfort or pain.

Stay tuned to their sleeping habits, they’re telling you more than you think! ❤️

☀️🐾 Keeping Your Dog Safe from Heat Stress This Summer 🐾☀️

Summer is a wonderful time for walks, play and adventures with our dog, but the heat can quickly become dangerous. Knowing the early signs of heat stress and how to respond can save your dog from serious harm.

𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒇𝒐𝒓:
🐾 Heavy panting or difficulty breathing
🐾 Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
🐾 Lethargy, weakness or unsteady walking
🐾 Bright red or purple tongue and gums
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🐾 Confusion, staggering or collapse

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐 if you notice these signs:
1️⃣ Move them to a cool area immediately – shade, air conditioning or a cool indoors.
2️⃣ Offer small amounts of water – avoid forcing them to drink if they are struggling.
3️⃣ Cool them gradually – use cool (not ice cold) water on their paws, belly, and head. Ice water can cause shock.
4️⃣ Monitor breathing and behaviour – keep them calm and sitting while they recover.
5️⃣ Seek veterinary help immediately if symptoms are severe, don’t improve quickly, or if your dog collapses. Heat stress can become life-threatening VERY FAST.

Prevention is always better than cure:

- Avoid walking or exercising during the hottest part of the day

- Provide plenty of shade and fresh water

- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes

- Use cooling mats, vests or damp towels on very hot days

With a little awareness and preparation, you can help your dog enjoy a safe, happy summer.

Shake it Off
Does your furry friend do a full body shake as if they have just stepped out of the bath? It looks cute, yet this little behaviour offers a fascinating window into your dog’s emotional world. At Kalmpets, we love helping families understand these subtle signals.

Shake offs often happen after something your dog has found a bit stressful or confusing. It is their way of resetting. A quick shake helps them pause, release tension and move on. You will see it in all sorts of contexts. Two pups may shake after a burst of rowdy play to help them settle. Dogs may also shake after greeting an unfamiliar dog or person as a way to ease social tension.

A shake off is a healthy, positive coping strategy. It is far better than more overt stress responses. When you notice your dog doing a shake off, it is worth supporting them with space, calm praise or a chance to regroup. It shows they are trying to manage their feelings in a safe way.

When have you noticed your dog do a shake off and what might they have been communicating?

🚗🐾 Summer Car Travel Tips for Your Dog 🐾🚗
Heading out on a holiday road trip or just popping to the park, keeping your dog safe and comfortable in the car sets everyone up for a calm and happy journey. Here are the essentials for stress free, safe travel.

1️⃣ Use a Safety Harness or Crate 🦺
A loose dog can be distracting and unsafe. Choose a well fitted harness that clips to the seatbelt or secure your dog in a sturdy crate. These options help protect them during sudden stops or sharp turns and keep you focused on the road.

2️⃣ Keep Heads Inside the Car 🌬️
It might look fun, but letting your dog hang their head out of the window increases the risk of injury from dust, insects or debris. Keeping them safely secured inside the car is much safer.

3️⃣ Back Seat is Best 🚫
The front seat is not ideal for dogs because airbags can cause serious injury. The back seat is safer, and a pet barrier works well for larger dogs travelling in the cargo area of an SUV or hatchback.

4️⃣ Plan Regular Breaks 🚻
Longer summer drives can be tiring. Aim for regular stops so your dog can stretch, toilet and have a drink. It helps prevent car sickness and keeps the trip comfortable for everyone.

5️⃣ Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car 🚗🔥
Even with the windows cracked, parked cars heat quickly in summer. Heat stress can develop fast. If you need to leave the car, take your dog with you or have someone stay with them.

6️⃣ Pack the Essentials 🧳
Bring water, a portable bowl, a favourite toy, a blanket, treats and waste bags. For nervous travellers, consider pheromone sprays or a calming routine they already find reassuring.

7️⃣ Build Confidence with Short Trips 🚘
If your dog is new to car travel, start with short, positive outings. Pair the car with good experiences and rewards, and gradually build up to longer trips.

With a little planning, summer car rides can be safe, calm and enjoyable for both you and your dog. 🐕💨
