Stroke of Luck 🍀 [National Stroke Week]
This National Stroke Week, I reflect on my own stroke of luck🍀. Hi, I'm Jo Barron-Perry, a mining engineer with 30 years of experience in the Australian resources sector. At age 50 in June 2018, I experienced a stroke due to a brain bleed from high blood pressure. Shockingly, 1 in 3 adults in Australia has high blood pressure, responsible for 41% of strokes.
High blood pressure can stem from various factors like family history, stress, and lifestyle habits. In my case, a mix of these contributed. Managing blood pressure is crucial; stress-induced spikes can lead to severe health issues like strokes or heart attacks.
Beyond knowing the Stroke First Aid, consider post-hospital tips:
1. Update your emergency contacts for immediate help.
2. Assess your financial stability during hospital incapacitation.
3. Understand the income protection provided by your superannuation.
4. Ensure you have updated wills, power of attorney, and consider a 'power of guardianship'.
5. Open up to friends and family about your health and seek their support.
Remember the 3 BPs: Blood pressure, Be prepared, and my stroke of 🍀 Jo BP .
