Vegan Leather… What is it?

Lets set the record straight. Some very interesting facts…

Most “vegan leathers” are PVC or PU, made with highly polluting fossil fuels and are not “all natural”
Most “plant based” “vegan leathers” are predominantly plastic based – don’t be fooled by words such as apple, cactus, pineapple etc. All need a plastic-based structure for durability and wearability.
Plastic might be animal free but it’s definitely not sustainable
Vegan leather is not a material, it’s a marketing term. Over half of surveyed consumers* have no idea what ‘vegan leather’ is made of and in 2022, Portugal was the latest in a list of countries to outlaw the term.
At the end of its life, leather will easily degrade, compared to fossil fuel-based polyester, PVC and PU which add to the plastic waste filling the planet.
Microplastics are ending up in the food chain. In 2022 they were detected in our bodies for the first time!
Reather is a responsible choice – lasts a lifetime and makes valuable use of a by-product from the food industry. The production of leather does not drive slaughter of animals.
