Koda presented to our clinic with this pink mass protruding out of the inner corner of her eye.

This complication is known as a “cherry eye” and it is a prolapse and swelling of the third eyelid gland 🍒👀.

The condition is unlikely to resolve on its own and can cause complications to the eye such as dry eye and conjunctivitis if untreated.

Cherry eye’s occur due to the connecting tissue of the third eyelid being weak. It is a genetic condition and not directly caused by trauma or injury. Breeds such as Rottweilers, Pugs and Bulldogs are more prone.

Dr Krystle surgically replaced the third eyelid back into position and secured it with sutures 👩🏼‍⚕️.

Have a look through a vets eye! (Microscope)👁️

A veterinarian places a small sample under the microscope to aid in the diagnosis of infections and identify micro-organisms that could be making a patient unwell or causing discomfort🔬.

Veterinarians can use a microscope to analyze urine, faeces, blood, skin scrapings, ear swabs, fluid from joints and cells of lumps 🩸.

Pictured is an image of a urine sample that has been magnified using the microscope to make the issue visible for our veterinarians to identify🔍.

The circles are white blood cells that can indicate that there is inflammation present. The rod-shapes are a type of bacteria🦠.

The veterinary diagnosed this patient with a urinary tract infection and dispensed medication to treat the issue👩🏼‍⚕️.

Are you letting your dog out to toilet more? Is the water bowl always empty? Time for a check up! 👩🏼‍⚕️

As our pets age, they become more at risk of developing medical conditions that can cause our pets to be extra thirsty and therefore, urinate more.

Let’s talk about 3 common diseases in our older patients.

Diabetes - insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels in the body. When insufficient insulin is being produced or the body is not absorbing insulin, blood sugar levels spike. Diabetes can affect a pet of any age but is more common in geriatric patients, and overweight pets. Some signs of diabetes included increased thirst, frequent urination, lethargy, increased appetite and weight loss.

Cushings disease - An endocrine disorder that affects the hormone known as cortisol, creating an overproduction. Cortisol, knows as the “stress hormone” helps the body regulate. Senior dogs often show signs including a increased thirst, frequent urination, a potbelly appearance and skin issues.

Kidney disease - A condition that affects the kidneys ability to filter blood and remove waste products. CKD (chronic kidney disease) slowly develops overtime due to deterioration of the kidneys and causes issues in our senior patients. Symptoms included increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, decreased appetite and lethargy.

If your pet is urinating more frequently or drinking more water, book a consult with one of our veterinarians. In-house blood testing is encouraged for our senior pets to help diagnose any of the above comditions before they become life threatening 👩🏼‍⚕️🩺 🩸.

CPR TRAINING DAY🚨

Our team underwent CPR training with Tyson from the Vet Nurse Project🩺.

As a team, veterinarians and veterinary nurses all play an important role in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Topics covered in the training session included:

-Executing efficient chest compression
-Providing oxygen through artificial breaths
-Maintaing circulation
-Administering emergency drugs
-Connecting appropriate monitoring equipment

Regular training sessions and team building exercises strengthen our ability to work together as a team and perform CPR with the highest chances of successful resuscitation.

Thank you Tyson for the training session🐾.

Ever wondered what diseases are covered in the F3 vaccine for your feline friend? 🤔 Let us break it down for you!

The F3 vaccine, also known as the core vaccine for cats, protects against three serious diseases:

1️⃣ Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1): This virus can cause respiratory infections and eye problems in cats.

2️⃣ Feline Calicivirus (FCV): Another common cause of respiratory infections in cats, FCV can lead to sneezing, coughing, and oral ulcers.

3️⃣ Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV): Also known as feline distemper, FPV is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. Vaccination provides strong protection against this deadly disease.

Out in house pathology set up is essential for obtaining blood results in a timely matter, for surgical and hospitalised patients 🔬🩺.

🩸Presurgical blood testing can help in the identication of abnormalities in our patients prior to anaesthetia. Our veterinarians analyse these blood results to create an anaesthetia plan tailored to your pet to minimise complications.

🩸A general health test is often run on unwell patients to help identify possible causes of sickness. This test can help veterinairans diagnose conditions such as diabetes, liver damage and kidney disease. A complete blood count is also performed to determine the presence of infection or diagnose anaemia.

🩸 An emergency profile is used on patients presenting in critical condition and provides fast and accurate information. An emergency profile gives a complete blood count, organ function assessment, coagulation testing and blood gases - oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. This testing can help diagnose metabolic diseases, snake envenomations, sepsis and many more serious conditions.

Let’s talk about the importance of keeping our dogs up to date with vaccines!💉🐾

Vaccination’s are essential to build up our dogs immunity against contagious and potentially deadly diseases💪🏽. Dogs that are fully vaccinated have a significantly lower risk of becoming infected with a contagious disease compared to unvaccinated dogs.

Puppies with immature immune systems and adult dogs that are immune compromised (elderly dogs or dogs living with disease such as cancer) are at high risk of contracting these diseases if they come into contact with another contagious dog🚨.

Maintaining immunity of adult dogs through the annual vaccine not only keeps that individual dog safe but also helps to prevent the risk of our puppies and immune compromised dogs becoming infected❤️.

Annunally dogs should receive a C5 vaccine to maintain their immunity against preventable diseases 💉.
C = Canine
5 = 5 diseases

The diseases covered in a C5 vaccination include:

🦠Parvovirus - A highly contagious disease that is spread from dog to dog through direct or non direct contact with faeces. The disease causes extreme gastrointestinal symptoms including bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

🦠Distemper - A viral disease that attacks the nervous system, respiratory system and gastrointestinal system. Dogs often display signs such as discharge from the nose and eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, fever and neurological signs.

🦠Hepatitis - A viral disease that attacks the liver and other organs. Dogs can become infected with Hepatitis by ingestions bodily fluids from a contagious dog.

🦠Parainfluenza Virus - Known as “kennel cough”, parainfluenza is a contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory tract. Common signs including a dry hacking cough, discharge from the nose, lethargy and decreased appetite.

🦠Bordetella Bronchiseptica - Another strain of “kennel cough” that is caused by a contagious bacteria. Causing inflammation of the airway and symptoms such as a cough, retching, nasal discharge and sneezing.

To check the vaccination status of your pet and ensure they are up to date against these preventable diseases, please call our reception team on 49912377🐾.

Grass seeds are a common issue we see among our fury friends. Grass seeds are small, sharp and pointy which make them perfect for getting lodged where they shouldn’t be and often are unseen🌾.

They can bury through the skin, glide up into the nose, get stuck under an eyelid and even make their way down ears. Unfortunately for Sadie, 67 grass seeds had done exactly that and travelled down her ear canals 👂.

Using some fancy camera equipment known as an endoscopy and tiny tonges, our team were able to remove all of the grass seeds from Sadie’s ears. This procedure takes patience and precision to remove each grass seed without damaging the delicate ear drum🎥.

Sadie’s ears are feeling much more comfortable now🐾👂.

Meet Elsie the 10 year old mastiff cross, pictured with her owner, Emma, who is one of our amazing trainee nurses🐾.

Elsie visited us at CVH for a dental procedure to treat an injury of her left upper carnasial tooth. To properly diagnose and treat the injury Elsie was anesthetised to take X-rays of her teeth🧑🏻‍⚕️.

We have advanced digital dental imagining equipment which provides us with information on the health of the teeth and bones of the jaw.

Without intervention, Elsie would be a risk of forming a tooth root abscess. A painful infection that creates a pocket of pus underneath the tooth💉.

Lucky for Elsie, Emma spotted the signs of tooth pain at home and brought her in for treatment before an infection started grow.

Signs of dental disease and injury include:
🦷 Bad breath
🦷 Pawering at mouth
🦷 Reluctance to eat food - especially hard foods
🦷 Dropping food while chewing it
🦷 Chewing food slowly
🦷 whimpering when mouth is touched
🦷 excessive drooling
🦷 inflamed gums

Animals often hide pain until it becomes unbearable, which can make it difficult for owners to spot signs of dental disease and injury.

Dental disease is a common health problem our animals face. Primarily, tartar and plaque is the main cause of inflammation of the gums and overtime creates bone loss. Although, there is other factors that can increase the chance of your pet getting dental disease;

Age - general wear and tear on teeth can cause tartar and plaque to form quicker.
Breed - small dog breeds are more prone to getting dental disease.
Diet - pets that are fed primarily soft foods are more susceptible.
Retained puppy teeth - causes over crowding of teeth and plaque and tartar to form quicker.
Injury - fractured teeth can create infection and cause pain

We offer 6 monthly dental checks by our veterinarians to help you keep ontop of your dogs dental health. Our veterinarians can advise you on prevention of dental disease, identify trauma and disease formation and perform dental procedures 🏥.

Once Elsie’s tooth was removed, the team gave all of her remaining 41 teeth a scale and polish to remove tartar and plaque that was starting to form on her senior teeth.
