Are you letting your dog out to toilet more? Is the water bowl always empty? Time for a check up! 👩🏼⚕️
As our pets age, they become more at risk of developing medical conditions that can cause our pets to be extra thirsty and therefore, urinate more.
Let’s talk about 3 common diseases in our older patients.
Diabetes - insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels in the body. When insufficient insulin is being produced or the body is not absorbing insulin, blood sugar levels spike. Diabetes can affect a pet of any age but is more common in geriatric patients, and overweight pets. Some signs of diabetes included increased thirst, frequent urination, lethargy, increased appetite and weight loss.
Cushings disease - An endocrine disorder that affects the hormone known as cortisol, creating an overproduction. Cortisol, knows as the “stress hormone” helps the body regulate. Senior dogs often show signs including a increased thirst, frequent urination, a potbelly appearance and skin issues.
Kidney disease - A condition that affects the kidneys ability to filter blood and remove waste products. CKD (chronic kidney disease) slowly develops overtime due to deterioration of the kidneys and causes issues in our senior patients. Symptoms included increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, decreased appetite and lethargy.
If your pet is urinating more frequently or drinking more water, book a consult with one of our veterinarians. In-house blood testing is encouraged for our senior pets to help diagnose any of the above comditions before they become life threatening 👩🏼⚕️🩺 🩸.
