Chocolate is one of the most common Easter emergencies in dogs.

It contains theobromine, which affects the heart and nervous system. Dark chocolate is the highest risk, but any amount can be a problem depending on your dog’s size.

If your dog has eaten chocolate, do not wait for symptoms to develop. Early, preventative treatment is often recommended, as it is more effective before clinical signs such as vomiting, restlessness, or tremors begin.

Online chocolate toxicity calculators such as https://www.msdvetmanual.com/multimedia/clinical-calculator/chocolate-toxicity-calculator can help estimate risk based on your dog’s weight and the amount eaten, but they are a guide only. If there is any uncertainty, it is best to seek veterinary advice promptly.
