Still no need to panic re bird flu. Just be aware.

Queensland has recorded its second event of H5 bird flu, in a single migratory seabird.

Samples from a dead shearwater found on Castaways Beach on the Sunshine Coast tested positive to H5 bird flu last night.

There remain no detections in poultry, nor evidence of large-scale deaths in any animals in Queensland.

If you find sick or dead wild birds or wildlife, avoid contact, keep children and pets away, record what you see, and report immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Bird flu – what does it mean for your dog or cat?

There has understandably been a bit of chat about avian influenza lately, particularly here on the Sunshine Coast with the virus detected in local wild birds. So, what does this actually mean for your pets?

The absolute best thing you can do is prevent your four-legged family members from accessing or investigating wild wildlife.

πŸ• Keep a close eye on dogs around beaches, parks, and waterways. This is especially important if your dog loves to sniff out or scavenge things they find on the ground!

🐈 If you have a hunting cat, keeping them indoors or in a secure outdoor enclosure is currently the safest option to prevent unwanted contact.

If you happen to come across a sick or dead wild bird while out and about:
🚫 Do not touch it or let your pets get near the area.
πŸ“ Note the exact location and a brief description of what you saw.
πŸ“ž Report the sighting immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 (available 24/7).

There is absolutely no need to panic, but it is worth being sensible and vigilant given our beautiful coastal lifestyle and the number of birds around us.
