A gift all the way from the UK 💙 Our wonderful friends at Budgie Rescue Wirral have hand written us a beautiful card which doubles as a print from Budgerigardener 🥺

After a long week of work, it was lovely to receive this and definitely put a small on my face. I am grateful to be apart of such a supportive community.

A couple of update for those following along at home:

♡ Princess Daisy is one of our Funky Fungus Flock (Macrorhabdus) budgies, and we noticed she had a really dirty head! We got her crop and faecal checked incase it was vomit from a flare up, but she came back completely clear. So we have determined she may have taken a bath and then stuck her head into the mulch and crumbles.

♡ Shane recently had eye surgery, he is healing well and the swelling around the eye has come down. Fingers crossed that he can rejoin Ilya soon!

♡ Marcus our blind boy is coping well, we put his food in the exact same spot everyday and he has not lost any condition. Though he doesn't play with toys, he enjoys the company of his budgie friend.

3 successful adoptions recently 😍😍

We had some previous adopters wanting to adopt new family members, and 4 birds found their forever perches!

Jack & Jill joined the flock with Lysander & Zephyr, and all 4 have bonded quickly and just want to be together all the time!

Shiphead joined Charming in a new aviary, and joins Luna, Fred & Pippa who she met here at LLRS. Shiphead has been waiting for a home since 09/2025, and has happily settled in.

Azrial joined the very chatty and friendly Yuki (prev. Pingu) as his companion, and have been enjoying each other's company.

We love return adopters, because more rescue birds are getting a second chance and it means we get to see our birds again and know they are being loved 🥰

Shane's Surgery 🩺

As you know, this little zebbie came to us with a swollen and protruding eye. The hope was that medication (eye drops, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories) would be enough to fix the problem, but unfortunately the eyeball continued to protrude outside of the eyelids.

He even got a seed stuck to his eyeball last night!!
We decided to go ahead with evisceration of the eye today, where the vet removed the internal contents of the eyeball to allow the eyelid to close over again. This procedure is much safer in birds compared to full removal of the eyeball (enucleation).

While that eye won't function anymore, Shane is hopefully feeling some relief now that debris can't get stuck on his eye anymore and he can blink again.

We said goodbye to Ritchie this week 🥺

Ritchie was found outside a closed petshop in a cage, and luckily rescued before being eaten by a local predator. He came with plucked legs, and dropped wings, but didn't pluck until a few weeks ago when we discovered he had bad arthritis.

He stopped plucking with pain relief, but suddenly lost significant weight and was spending more looking unwell.

We decided the kindest thing for Ritchie was to go peacefully, and we sent him to the Rainbow Bridge on Monday.

Ritchie spent 275 days here, and he spent the majority of those days happy and content. We are so glad to have given him a safe space for 9 months, and he will be missed 💙🌈

Many of you know that my day job is as a veterinary nurse, so death and loss are not new to me.

Through rescue, I may experience a loss within an hour of meeting a bird or after months of knowing them. Even after birds have been adopted, their owners will often update me on their progress occasionally, and that includes letting me know if they pass away. And I am always grateful to know the good or the bad.

This week has been a rough one. Three budgies, adopted into three amazing, loving and wonderful families, had to say goodbye to them. All were provided with veterinary care, but there are some things even medicine can't cure.

I extend my condolences to my fellow rescuers and my Lazzi's Legacy family. For every life they touched along the way, for the second chance at love they offered, and then the hardest goodbye.

May you meet again one day 🌈
