❗️We are CLOSED TO ALL INTAKES until January 5th 2026 ❗️

We lost D2 this morning, and I am absolutely devastated. I just think I need some time to recuperate my energy and restore my mental health. The vet team hasn't found any reason so far, so we will be sending samples for further testing incase there was anything contagious. Rest now baby boy, may you finally feel what its like to fly, you were so so loved and I will never forget you.

We are also over capacity and with lab closures coming up, we won't be able to test new intakes so have decided to close to all intakes until Jan 5th.

Please contact avian vets, RSPCA, and Lost Dogs Home if you've found a stray bird.

$1600 in vet bills in less than a week 🫠

Steve had to have a full work up as he developed an uncomfortable stance and a swollen abdomen. He was found to have quite a large liver, and he's currently on pain relief and supplements.

Ritchie hasn't been to the vet yet but we found him on his back being attacked by one of the hens. He's stable and looking better on some pain relief and heat.

We had intake on 4 Indian Ringnecks - whose vet visits are more expensive as they get more done.

We also had Moon Crater come to us from LDH as a stray, she's only a juvenile and we hope her family is looking for her.

We are desperate to find new homes for our budgies, and cannot open to new public intakes until this happens. Most of our birds are at https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/12246.

Who are these familiar faces?? 👀

Back in August, we had three baby budgies surrendered with metabolic bone disease and broken bones. At the time, we were only able to obtain three out of a clutch of five.

The previous owners have now reached out and asked us to take the remaining two birds: Lemon and Lucky. These little ones have similar issues to Pea, Bean, and Sprout, with Lucky having a deformed, previously fractured leg, and Lemon presenting with a dropped wing.

They also surrendered their nest box and supplies after we urged them not to breed again - something they understood and agreed to.

The family was incredibly grateful for our help, even gifting us beautiful roses, chocolates, and a donation in a handwritten card.

Though the circumstances aren't ideal, one of our goals is to educate and put as much accurate information out there as possible.

Bean has since been adopted, but Pea and Sprout are still on the hunt for their forever perches!

❗️Foster Carers Needed❗️

We have 4 Indian Ringneck Fledglings in care at the moment and are seeking foster carers to help us with them while they wait for their forever homes.

They are awaiting for tests for PBFD, Chlamydia, Sexing and are cleared on Faecal and Microchipped.

Foster Carers can be provided with:
- A cage
- Pellets and seed
- Perches and toys
- 24 hour assistance as needed

Foster Carers will need to provide:
- A safe space away from predators including cats and dogs
- A safe space without unwell or untested birds
- Daily interaction
- Fresh vegetables
- Photo/Video Updates to LLRS
- Ability to transport to us or Melbourne Bird Vet in Scoresby in an emergency

Getting a pet is an adult decision ⬇️

A budgie is a living, breathing creature who has thoughts, emotions and at times... can get sick. They are not a toy that can be disposed of and replaced.

Though I am not a parent myself, I truly believe that teaching your child responsibility and compassion includes stepping in when important.

Fig was surrendered to us because the adult in a child's life decided that he was not worth the vet bills when he was diagnosed with macrorhabdus. It doesn't matter if your child is 5 or 17 - what lesson is being taught when a pet is given up instead of helped when needed??

Even if a pet is your child's responsibility - it is ultimately the parent's role to ensure the bird is taken care of - even if it means paying for the vet bill (or ensuring the pet is fed, cleaned and happy).

You as a parent decided to bring this living creature into your home. You decided to say yes to your child. It is absolutely your responsibility at the end of the day.

Fletcher is loving life with his new best friend Franks 😍

Fletcher was surrendered to us by a petshop as he was flightless and not sellable. Franks' owner was looking for a companion for her elderly cockatiel who lost her budgie friend - so Fletcher came along at just the right time!

Some faces I haven't had a chance to fully introduce:

1. Noah & Ark were surrendered when their owner died - they are a sweet pair of boys and Noah especially loves to flirt with others
2. Sam and Jim were both found as strays with no owners found
3. Ritchie is doing well, and enjoying the company of other birds, we are hoping his feathers where he plucked will grow back too
