Geophagus brachybranchus, also known as Red horsface & is related to Geophagus Alto Sinu, AKA Gold Dust cichlid, these species are freshwater fish belonging to the Cichlidae family. They are native to the rivers of South America, particularly the Rio Sinú in Colombia. Other sources say it is also found in Suriname. As adults, these fish are known for their vibrant coloration and unique behavior of sifting through the substrate for food, hence the name "Earth Eater".

Key characteristics and care:

Scientific Name: Geophagus brachybranchus

Common Names: Red Horsface

Origin: Rio Sinú in Colombia and also found in Suriname

Size: Can reach 180-200mm in captivity
Temperament: Generally peaceful, but can be territorial during breeding

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
pH: 6.5 to 8.0
GH: 5 to 15 dGH
KH: 2 to 8 dKH

Diet: Omnivorous, enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods. They naturally sift through the substrate, so a soft, sandy substrate is recommended.

Aquarium: Requires a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and hiding places. A tank of 180cm x 60cm or larger is recommended for a group, according to Shrimplovers.

Compatibility: Can be kept with other peaceful, similarly sized cichlids.
