Public Service Announcement for Canberra dog owners.
There have been multiple cases of Blue Green Algae toxicity from dogs who have been to Lake Ginninderra over the last few weeks. This is a rapid onset poison causing an often fatal toxicity. They do not have to drink the water, just lick them selves after being in the water to become affected. Symptoms are often sudden onset but can be delayed for up to 45 mins and include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, tremors, seizures, collapse, blue gums and difficulty breathing. Although there are no known cases from other lakes in Canberra we would urge all dog owners to practice extreme caution around any stagnant water.
