Dr Gwen Shirlow BVSc (Hons I)
Gwen believes that veterinary care is all about connection and compassion by helping pets live their best lives and supporting the people who love them. She values being part of the special bond between people and their pets, from welcoming playful youngsters to helping senior companions age gracefully.
Gwen brings a wealth of experience to the Harrison team. After graduating from Sydney University with First Class Honours in Veterinary Science, she worked in rural mixed practice in Wagga Wagga before focusing her skills on small animals in Canberra, Queensland and Broken Hill and later in England and Wales. Most recently, she spent a decade as a partner at Brudine Veterinary Hospital here in Canberra, where she built lasting relationships with countless pets and their families.
Her professional interests include feline medicine, ultrasound, and complex medical cases. Gwen has undertaken further study in feline medicine, pathology and ultrasound and loves applying this knowledge to enhance the care of every pet she treats.
At home, Gwen has recently adopted Poppy, a nearly nine-year-old Chihuahua who has quickly become part of the family. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with friends and family, and can often be found quilting, gardening, hiking, or stand-up paddle boarding.
Gwen looks forward to meeting you and your beloved furry or feathered family members soon.

One of the stressors of having a sick pet, when your regular vet is fully booked, is finding someone who listens and can triage with skill, understanding and compassion. After calling many local vets (also fully booked), the mobile service and facing the reality of waiting 4hrs for the Emergency service I tried Harrison Vet.
I was amazed at their profession telephone triage and was given a timely appointment within the hour.
♥️Dr Gwen Shirlow was just amazing with our large German Shepherd Odi, establishing trust and confidence on the first visit.
I am grateful for her superior veterinary knowledge, exceptional communication skills of medical issues and ability to provide reassuring advice.

Dr Gwen cares about the animals and this was evident by the time she took getting to know our fur baby and us. Her examination was thorough and skilled.

Meet Dr Gwen Shirlow – Our New Vet! 🌟

We’re so excited to introduce Gwen to our Harrison team. She brings a wealth of experience, having recently co-owned a practice right here in Canberra, as well as previously working in rural mixed practice and overseas.

Gwen has a special interest in ultrasonography, feline medicine, and those tricky complex cases, so your pets are truly in the best hands.

She loves being part of that wonderful bond between people and their pets, from playful puppies and curious kittens to helping our gorgeous senior companions age gracefully.

At home, Gwen has recently adopted Poppy, her sweet 8-year-old Chihuahua. When she’s not caring for her patients, you’ll find her catching up with friends and family, quilting, gardening, hiking or out on a paddleboard.

🌈💔 Goodbye, Olive 💔🌈
It has taken me a little while to find the words for this post… a few weeks ago, we said goodbye to our beloved Olive.
This quirky girl brought us so much joy, laughter and love. It was always hard to believe we were her third home, as she had the gentlest, most beautiful soul. I like to think she is basking in the sunshine and enjoying endless squeaky toys over the rainbow bridge. She will always be in my heart.

10 swims in ice-cold water this month… and yes, my face today says it all 🥶😂
It’s the last day of the month and I’ve officially completed my chilly challenge! Thank you to everyone who donated and cheered me on - together we’ve raised funds for cancer research and kept me shivering in style ❄️💛

Legs up, head down for swim number 7…..although it did take me awhile to warm up after this one! Thank you for everyone’s support with the fundraising! Together we have exceeded my fundraising goal…and I still have 3 more swims to do this month!
