We are situated on around 18 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of

both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone. Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities. We are best known for our amazing "up close and personal" animal encounters, which provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

Explore our Fern Gully Extinction Trail with new Dinosaurs & Megafauna!

Catch Ally the interactive Allosaurus or meet one of our roaming Baby Dinosaurs!

WHEN: Ally the Allosaurus will make guest appearance at 10:15am and 11:15am during School holidays (non-Public Holidays only). Baby Dinosaurs will be out exploring between 10:30am – 3pm daily during ACT school holidays

Did you know that 7️⃣1️⃣% of the 🌎 is made up of different water bodies 🤔

Not only is water an essential resource for every single living organism on earth, it also provides many unique habitats for all sorts of flora and fauna 🪷

From rivers, billabongs, oceans, lakes, rock pools, mangroves and all sorts of other water bodies, water gives life and home to so many species!

Our Aquarium is growing and growing and we are so proud of the work our dedicated aquarist have put in in creating an inspiring and educational space 🌟

Our Barking Owls Rocco and Ruby have the most stunning 👀s

As the darkness settles in parts of Australia and the symphony of the night begins, you may be forgiven to think that that’s a barking dog outside…

You may in fact being listening to the call of a Barking Owl!

This species of owl has a distinctive call of ‘woof🐕woof’ and can be found in parts of Australia 🌏

Our Tammar Wallabies who share their home in the walkthrough with our Emu ‘Moo’ are one of the smallest wallaby species in Australia 🌏

Fun Fact, our Tammar Wallabies are all named after the Hobbits from Lord of the Rings… we guess that’s why they love potatoes so much! 🤭

Puggle Club News, April 2025

Corn snakes

Join us for another fun filled Puggle Club at the Zoo!

*Additional 11am time slot added.

This month we will be asking, "So what's to like about snakes anyway?"

They're slithery and scaly, and have icky flicking tongues and creepy unblinking eyes.

You might be surprised!

Come and meet our fascinating little friends, the corn snakes, and learn about their amazing abilities and unique characteristics.

Create your own colourful slinky macaroni corn snake and enjoy a story about a little girl who positively, definitely was never ever going to like snakes.

Sessions on the 2nd and 9th of April at 10am and 11am

Meeting in the discovery learning centre room, downstairs in the back corner of the aquarium.

Today we are celebrating our Sun Bear Otay’s 20th anniversary of being rescued by Free the Bears! 🐻

So what better opportunity to look back and reflect on how far she has come and pay tribute to the amazing work of Free the Bears. Otay has absolutely thrived since being rescued, the Zoo Keepers at National Zoo and Aquarium have spent 2 decades working with Otay to ensure she has the best life 🥰

Since arriving at the National Zoo & Aquarium Canberra, she met her breeding partner Arataki. The pair had a baby girl together named Mary, who now resides at Taronga Zoo Sydney! It hasn't always been an easy road for Otay though, as she has overcome many challenges. However, she has grown stronger and more curious with every day!

Otay's story highlights the success of organisations like Free the Bears. To this day, many Sun Bears in the wild are still at risk due to habitat loss and poaching.

But you can help protect these amazing animals!

Join us in supporting conservation efforts that help Sun Bears like Otay and Arataki stay safe & thriving!

Good Morning!

We've had such an AMAZING response to our new 'Cubs Club' so thank you to our members for taking advantage of this awesome inclusion!

But, you may be wondering 'What's the difference between Puggle Club and Cubs Club'?

First, they're both GREAT programs for our younger community members!

But as importantly, please read through the break down of both below.

Puggle Club:

These fun-filled 50-60 minute sessions include story time, activities and a friendly animal interaction. The target age is 3-4yrs with both members & public visitors invited! Check out our website for more info.

Cubs Club:

These 30min sessions are only open to members, with information posted in our Members Newsletter. Each month will have a different theme with an animal talk targeted at Primary aged children and a colouring competition. Dates will also vary around zoo activities and a include a spread of days so we try not to conflict with after school activities.

There's not better time to sign up as a member of our Zoo'mmunity and take advantage or some superb offerings!
