This is a continuation of our story.
21 days after Blackie got the fertilized eggs to hatch Merlin, Blue, Lacy, Wave, Macy, Cagney, Grace, Speedy and Flash were hatched. We fell in love we watched them grow. These chickens were about 6 different breeds and our backyard was so interesting we started spending more time out doors.
The most beautiful chicken was Grace the Araucana, my husband was disappointed when I sold her, but i know the new owner will love her. When my husband first took me to the chicken farm about a week after he bought the fertlized eggs he showed me the Araucana's and I said OMG you didn't buy those did you? To me they looked really crazy but now the garden looks sad that Grace is gone and I will be breeding Araucana's for their grace, their looks and they lay blue eggs.
When Grace was born she looked so funny with her little hood so initially we called her Hoodie. Then as she grew up and looked so graceful walking through the yard I had to change her name. Now she lives on a property with Speedy and Flash, Boots and a few older small hens. She will have a wonderful life and her owners will get to enjoy her Blue eggs.

This is our story.
We had some yard chickens for about a year when Blackie our Australorp went broody. We tried throwing her off the nest. She would shake herself go and have a scratch and a feed and then hop back on the nest. This went on for 2 weeks. She was very determined. Finally I thought why don't I help her do what she is trying to do - have some chicks. I scanned the net and found some chicken farmers not too far away and got some fertilized eggs about 6 varieties of hen.
21 days later Blackie was a mother. We were in love with the chicks. Next Rhodie went broody then Pearl and then Cheepie. Blackie started something big. Then Hubbie bought an incubator. Holly dear - what were we doing?
Well now hubby has a massive incubator and we are moving to a property for half the week and we are starting a chicken farm. All from just trying to help out Blackie who desperately wanted to have chicks.
I am breeding rare and endangered species of chickens and I am going to change the look of the eggs in our cartons.

How Many Chicks Can fit In The Mealworm Bowl?

20/01/2019

Brownie had splayed hips - she couldn't walk when she was born - couldn't even get her body upright, so we splinted her legs for 36 hours. I thought she might die she looked so bad. Here's what happened when the splint came off. She ran up the hill. (The electric throw rug)

We had a tiny D'uccles chicken hatch (they are a mini chicken or bantum - its about 1/4 of the size of a normal chick - you almost need a microscope to see it) and it seemed to have splayed legs or hips and could not walk. So hubby put a splint on it to fix it. D'uccles are tiny little chickens that only lay about 100 eggs a year they are very sweet and quite precious and people fall in love with them and have them as pets. We call them Duckels for want of knowing how to pronounce their name of which i have hear there are many versions. How cute is this precious chick with his splint on?

I've been away for a few days and during this time hubbie was learing how to hatch another batch of chickens in the incubator. His hatch rate is going up. We have 4 pure bred Salmon faverolles and 2 pure bred Red Ancona's. We bought a brooder which they slept under the first night and second night they slept out beside it huddled together in a little bunch. Then Pearl who already has 7 chicks 2 weeks and 1 week old was given 6 more chicks. I said to hubbie over the phone surely 13 chicks won't fix under Pearl. He said they do he went out in the dark and all he could see was a couple of tiny heads poking out. Here is a picture of the 6 chicks Pearl inherited. Not all broodie hens will accept chicks like Pearl does. Blackie did not and Cheepie and Rhodie certainly wouldn't either. Pearl gets the Mother Hen of the Year Award from our batch of broodie girls.

Blackies second Brood of nine. Blackie wanted to be with her bestie's and after 4 weeks of being the mother of nine she had had enough. So we took her out of the enclosure and let her be with her mates. The little's hung out together and still do. They are really funny sometimes I would find them in the mid day heat sitting together in a pot with my pot plant. They thought they were little flowers. Here they are just hanging out together in a garden bed.

It is hard getting pictures of chickens because they are such busy little creatures. You will see one in a great pose and before you can get your iphone out of your pocket to take that photo it has moved. Here are Wave Flash and Hoodie busy together. I love chickens never have to worry about spiders any more. If I go into the front yard and I want to work somewhere I take Maisy our head chook
with me and put her down beside me and if anything moves she grabs it. She makes me feel safe.

My Yard Stock - my egg laying girls. Blackie and Blondie (the adopted hatchee) and Maisy our top Chick who keeps order in the yard. (Pearl, Rhodie and Cheepy are all in their own enclosures at the moment with their own chicks. They are also usually our egg laying girls.)
Blackie hatched Blondie and brought her up. Blondie was an only child as such we never really got near her. She was a hysterical child - we called her the pretty Princess - if we caught her and picked her up she would scream blue murder. She would never come near us and eat out of our hands.
What magic a little mince can do. She is now eating out of my hand with all the other chooks and is no longer such a fraidy cat. But she does still like to hang out with mama cause her bestie - Cheepy is with her chicks in a separate enclosure.

My 2 beautiful boys. Blue and Merlin. We are keeping Blue because we are breeding pure Wyandottes - not sure if we can fit in another enclosure for Merlin the Cuckoo Maran and some girls. I will sell him only if he is going to a nice home.
It is now June and I thought I would continue the story. Both boys are now grown up and look very impressive. Merlin has his own flock of girls and we are waiting for them to lay to see what sort of chicks they produce. Cuckoo Maran's are not common they are a rare chicken but they like a bit like Plymouth rock. Blue has some girls who are not quite grown up but Spring should be busy.

I want to show you some pictures of my pullets that are for sale. Here is Wave she has been very timid up till now but since I started giving her little mince meat treats she flies up onto my lap when I sit down and asks for her treat. Very Pretty girl would look good in any garden. No pest man required as there are no spiders.

Meet Inky-1 standing on my laptop - 1. Our first chick out of the incubator. Had no mates, so for the first 2 days I was mum. Then on the 3rd day I decided to put her in front of 'Pearl' our Australorp mum with 2 week old chicks. I didn't want to be mum again for 2 months. Pearl looked at Inky and made a little sound like yep a chick. I put Inky down and she was immediately accepted into the flock. This had not the case with Cheepy our Australorp chick, her sister was pecked to death and we rescued Cheepy and brought her up till she could fend for herself and join the flock. Things do not always go this smooth so I was pleasantly surprised and had lots of treats for Pearl and her chicks that day for being so accomodating.
