Let's hold ACT Parks And Recreation accountable
We have serious concerns about lake safety for dogs and people in Canberra.
💧 The ACT Government lakes website now lists “Tychonema algae” in Lake Ginninderra at the entry point where Scout died — but there’s no closure, or explanation about the danger!
⚠️ The single lake entry point only had a sign put up three days AFTER Scout died, even though the ACT Government had been informed immediately. And online, the lake still says “OPEN”!
👉The sign said “Open for swimming” when Scout swam there and died!
🌊 All other lakes and entry points are also listed as open, with no updates, warnings, or guidance for pets or people.
❓ Questions we’re asking:
• Is the water actually being tested?
• Are warnings issued fast enough to protect dogs and people—or only after a tragedy?
• How can dog owners stay safe when there’s no reliable information?
• What is being done to improve water quality?
🐶 Scout’s tragic death from blue-green algae poisoning shows how quickly these toxins can kill.
Until testing and warnings are transparent, accurate, and timely, dog owners must keep pets out of lakes entirely.
🙏 We will continue to push for clear, immediate warnings so no more dogs suffer from preventable poisoning.
