🦠 From rabies to bird flu: where do dangerous diseases come from and how do we stop them?

Every major emerging infectious disease made the same journey: from wildlife, through domestic animals, into us. Understanding this sequence is one of the most urgent unsolved problems in science, with consequences that go well beyond human health. Animals, ecosystems, and agriculture all pay the price.

Michael Ward has spent nearly 40 years studying this question. Using cases from rabies to bird flu, he gets into the mechanics of disease spillover: the contact rates, the pathways, and the moments where an outbreak could have been stopped. Because the best strategy for the next pandemic starts long before anyone gets sick.

📅 Thursday 7 May | 8:00 – 8:45 PM
📍 The Harold, 70A Ross St, Forest Lodge NSW 2037

The next pandemic doesn’t start with humans, and stopping it doesn’t either.

☀️🌡With extreme heat forecast over the next few days, it’s an important time to consider how high temperatures can affect pets.

Animals can feel the effects of rising temperatures sooner than we do, and without appropriate care, they may become uncomfortable, stressed, or unwell. Adjustments to routines and environments play an important role in supporting both safety and comfort during periods of heat.

As a veterinary teaching hospital, we regularly see the impacts of high temperatures on pets, ranging from heat‑related illness to preventable injuries. Certain animals are particularly vulnerable, including brachycephalic (flat‑faced) breeds, and awareness of these risks is essential in protecting your pet's welfare during extreme heat.

If your pet shows any signs of heat stress, seek veterinary attention immediately.

☀🌡Heatwaves can be dangerous for pets.

Dr Anne Quain, clinical veterinarian and lecturer in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, reminds pet owners that animals can be affected by heat much faster than people. High temperatures increase the risk of heat stress, burns, and serious illness, particularly for pets that struggle to regulate body temperature.

Understanding these risks and responding early can help protect animal welfare during periods of extreme heat. If you’re concerned about your pet, seeking veterinary advice promptly is important.

📞 Call (02) 9351 3437 if you have concerns, or bring your pet to our 24/7 emergency for urgent attention.

📍65 Parramatta Road Camperdown, NSW (24/7, 365 days a year).

Hot weather can be deadly for pets. If you care for animals, you need to ensure that they are in a well-ventilated environment, with access to shade and water all day, says Dr Anne Quain, Sydney School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney.
