In recognition of World Veterinary Day tomorrow, we are celebrating the veterinarians who are central to the work of our Veterinary Teaching Hospitals and the wider veterinary profession.

Their work goes beyond patient care, with a valued commitment to education and training. Through roles as academics, teachers, and mentors, our veterinarians help shape the next generation of professionals, with an impact that reaches well beyond our hospitals.

Thank you for your dedication, leadership, and ongoing contribution to the profession.

☀️🌡With extreme heat forecast over the next few days, it’s an important time to consider how high temperatures can affect pets.

Animals can feel the effects of rising temperatures sooner than we do, and without appropriate care, they may become uncomfortable, stressed, or unwell. Adjustments to routines and environments play an important role in supporting both safety and comfort during periods of heat.

As a veterinary teaching hospital, we regularly see the impacts of high temperatures on pets, ranging from heat‑related illness to preventable injuries. Certain animals are particularly vulnerable, including brachycephalic (flat‑faced) breeds, and awareness of these risks is essential in protecting animal welfare during extreme heat.

If your pet shows any signs of heat stress, seek veterinary attention immediately.

We are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

📞 Call (02) 4655 0077 if you have concerns.

🐶New legislation for dog breeders in NSW

From 1 December 2025, new NSW legislation came into effect for dog breeders.

The changes strengthen animal welfare, improve transparency, and help stop puppy farming across the state. Whether you breed dogs or have an accidental litter, these rules apply to you.

What’s changing?

🪪 Breeder identification
Everyone who breeds dogs must hold a breeder identification number (BIN) or a rehoming organisation number (RON), issued through the NSW Pet Registry.

⏱️ Limits on litters and caesareans
Each female dog can have a maximum of five litters in her lifetime.
No more than three litters can be delivered by caesarean.
If a dog has had two caesareans, any further pregnancy will need veterinary approval.

🏡 Limits on breeding dogs per premises
You can keep up to 20 entire female adult dogs over six months of age on one premises, unless an exemption has been granted. Some exceptions apply.

👥 Staffing requirements
There must be at least one staff member for every 20 dogs on the premises.
Staff may be owners, employees or volunteers and must be at least 14 years old.

📢 Advertising requirements
When advertising a dog for sale or transfer, you must include:
- the dog’s microchip number
- the seller’s BIN or RON

Some exceptions apply.

This list is a summary. For full guidelines and legal requirements, see 👉https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov.au/breeders

It’s amazing how quickly Ace the German Shepherd has grown in just two months. It really doesn’t take long for these little fluffballs to turn into full-grown dogs!

The early weeks of a puppy’s life are so important for setting them up for a healthy, happy future. Proper care, socialisation, and guidance at this stage make all the difference as they grow.

If you’d like advice on puppy care or want to book a check-up for your new pup, we’re here to help.

Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🎉

Today, we celebrate the incredible veterinary nurses and technologists who make our University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden such a special place. This week, we shared some cake in their honour, with Keith Merchant, our Commercial and Clinical Services Director, sharing a few words about why we love our vet nurses:

💛 They handle the messy, essential tasks that keep our patients safe and comfortable.
💛 They are highly empathetic, guiding and supporting pet owners through tough decisions with compassion and care.
💛 They make sure everything runs smoothly for animals, owners, and the team.
💛 They work tirelessly (often work nights and weekends), making sure no patient gets left behind.

And last but not least, our nurses and techs teach each other to fly. They create space for growth, opportunity, and diverse careers - from imaging and diagnostic nurses, to wildlife nurses and carers, and reproductive nursing, pathology, and beyond - even nurses who become veterinarians.

To our nurses and technologists: we see you, we celebrate you, and we thank you for everything you do.
