We have had an unprecedented number of surrender / dumping / unwanted lost & found calls over 100 in the last 2weeks.
Reading between the lines many of our temporary students or worker internationals do not want to bare the costs or boarding or they don’t have any perm residents to look after if they are going to return to care for their pet bunnies. These rabbits are frequently dumped as disposable pets.
People breeding bunnies with over 20 people with recents contact to us about one or 2 litters of rabbits they cannot find homes for are also irresponsible.
So many stories I keep hearing with people giving up their devoted little pet rabbits but sadly we are full, we have no room and cannot take in another rabbit. To be honest we won’t be able to with such slow adoption rates until March 2025 if we are lucky. We are not funded, we dont see many donations especially from the dumpers which is just rude.
So please be aware and understand we are not accepting any surrenders of any sort until possibly March next year due to space and cost of care to our foster carers.
However we have some beautiful natured adoptions available , so please call or text to book a meet and greet with our very adoptable bunnies.

Yesterday we picked up a dumped rabbit from a Golden Grove Vet Clinic. This beautiful Angora female was matted to the skin, the overgrown claws were matted and pushed into the skin and the owner had tried to cut the fur cutting the tail and many other snips to the skin with using scissors. The vet clinic tried the rspca and awl who would not take her into care. So my fab hubby Dave picked up Lily from the vet on way home from work. I named her Lily . I Let her settle last night after the 1 1/2 hour drive to the sanctuary with a big yummy veggie feed this morning and then this arvo Lily and I got to know each other with me giving her a full body shave and nails clipped.
Lily is now having her positive reinforcement treat of carrot sticks and between sticks she is scratching and grooming herself as she can finally feel skin.
Please folks never take on a long hair rabbit without experience without knowing grooming skills you could kill a rabbit and if you cannot manage grooming yourself contact a rabbit groomer.
Dumping or surrender of long hair rabbits to vets and shelters is preferable to leaving them in terrible condition. Due to long haired rabbits being a special needs category please do not take them on without a full understanding of their needs and the knowledge that an hour per week minimum has to go into the brushing and care.

It’s that time of the year again with many people dumping their pet rabbits. This week I have had 17 people call to ask if they can dump / surrender their bunnies. With not more of an excuse than they are over having bunnies, the kids lost interest quickly and the list goes on. A quick note never get pets for your children they all loose interest to a certain degree due to short attention span. Now we have also had people who did not want the expense of desexing as 3 of these enquiries needed to move on baby bunnies too, in fact lots. It’s so hard to find homes for baby bunnies so please desex as soon as you new baby bunny is of age. Sure it’s a nice thing for the kids to see but not if you cannot find homes after. Due to our numbers in care we cannot take the many kits being dumped.
Sadly the slow adoption rate or the fact we do phone interviews and do refuse some homes. We do this due to the experience on returns in the past and for the long term welfare of the bunnies.
We have had many returns lately with people adopting but not understanding the responsibility of care and interactions with their new family members.

So after saying all this I d like to say we have lots of bunnies needing FOREVER homes. If you are home for the holidays this is a perfect time to bond with your new pet bunny so please consider adoption. Our bunnies are all desexed and vaccinated and temperament assessed.

The other point is there is NO Vacancy for surender s we cannot take in any more rescue buns until adoptions start moving out. We unlike other shelters are NO KIlL so vacancy does not happen via euthanising unlike other shelters in SA.

ADOPT DONT SHOP please

Hi all I am just going to make it clear what we do. Now most of our followers will know I moved some years ago from Adelaide metro area to the country to Cambrai. Its nearly a two hour drive to the CBD.
SA Rabbit Rescue & Adoptions description of what we do.
Rescue = taking in unwanted and stray rabbits. Sadly we can only take in a certain amount due to housing/ cages available and when full there is no vacancy and we have to say no.
Due to distance I have to travel, I no longer do trapping or catching of stray rabbits reported by schools, councils etc due to me getting to last sighting and seeing nothing this is a waste of my time and huge fuel costs.
Adoptions= yes the strays and dumped / surrendered unwanted rabbits we will desex, health check, look after, vaccinate and offer for adoption some rabbits have been in care for years with us.
We have a very small team at SARR&A and we DO NOT help people catch their own escaped pet rabbits. It is your responsibility to keep safe and secure your pet.
We have had 2 enquiries this long weekend telling us (we have to come ) and catch a home owners escaped pet rabbit/s. One of these people had someone come after days of the bunny sitting almost on the door step catch her escaped rabbit they secured it and left and then she dropped it again after the helper who was sent by Lost Pet Adelaide left. This person lost the helpers contact and now wants further help to catch again. This was done out of kindness and the lack of resonsible care of dropping the rabbit outside again is very sad indeed. Sadly the rspca and AWL are also not in the position to do call outs to pet escapes or free ranging on the owners property.
Management of pets is very important, please make sure they are secure in the enclosures. Also please ensure you are able to tend to all their needs if disabled make sure you have assistance with feeding, cleaning and water supply as even catching them if they get loose is very difficult if your mobility is impaired. I ve been impacted by spinal injury myself this year and know the risks so please have you family or carer assist so you don’t have escape issues. You cannot expect with the cost of living a private non funded animal rescue or carer to drop everything to come help you catch your own pet escapee. Please ask neighbours, family and friends or your carer for this type of help.
We do care , we offered constructive advice in the catching and trapping but the owner did none of these things.
Thank you to Lost Pets of Adelaide for helping one of our callers as best they could but to no avail with the person dropping the pet again within hours of helper leaving.
Sadly there is only so much each private carer, non funded organisation can offer and do.
