We’re delighted to share that Karla Gundry has officially attained her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing - making her a fully Qualified Veterinary Nurse.

Karla is a highly valued member of the SCEVC team. Having grown up on a cattle farm, her passion for animals and their welfare has shaped her entire career. From volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary to working in the thoroughbred racing industry, Karla has always gone above and beyond to care for animals — and now brings that same dedication to her veterinary nursing.

Her love of horses and her interest in recovery and rehabilitation inspired her to pursue further qualifications, and we’re incredibly proud of her hard work and commitment.

Congratulations Karla!

Diagnostic imaging is an important tool veterinarians use to help diagnose and treat various conditions in horses. It can provide a detailed look at the body's structure and function, giving us the information we need to make an accurate diagnosis and plan effective treatment.

Our clinic has the latest wi-fi digital X-rays and digital ultrasound for diagnosing common tendon injuries and other internal problems.

Upon relocating to the Sunshine Coast, Tony Doherty purchased North Coast Equine Veterinary practice in 2001. At the time of purchasing the practice, it was a small operation located in the current street we currently operate out of.

As Tony started to build the practice and his reputation as a skilled equine veterinary surgeon became known across the region, he soon needed to relocate to larger premises that would accommodate his growing team.

In 2008 he purchased the property, where he is still located today, and opened a surgical and medical clinic in 2009 along with an associated small animal clinic.

📢 Confirmed Hendra Virus Case in SE QLD

Biosecurity Queensland has confirmed a case of Hendra virus in an unvaccinated horse in south-east Queensland. Sadly, the horse passed away after its condition deteriorated rapidly.

This is the first confirmed case in Queensland since 2022 and a timely reminder that vaccination is the only way to protect your horse and yourself from Hendra virus.

If your horse isn’t vaccinated or you have questions about Hendra protection, please call our clinic for more information and advice. We're here to help.

Thinking of purchasing a horse? A pre-purchase exam is essential.

If you're planning to buy a horse, we strongly recommend a pre-purchase examination to assess its suitability for your intended discipline.

This internationally recognised five-stage examination provides a thorough health assessment, including a detailed evaluation of the hooves and limbs (with flexion tests), observation during exercise, and examination post-cooldown.

Depending on the horse’s intended use and value, additional diagnostics may be recommended, such as radiographs (x-rays), endoscopy of the upper airway, or ultrasound of the tendons, to provide a complete picture of the horse’s condition.

A pre-purchase examination can often identify early-stage or potential issues, helping you avoid unexpected costs and the disappointment of an unsuitable or unsound horse.

To book a pre-purchase examination, please call 07 5491 6719 or email [email protected].

An abscess in a horse’s hoof can cause sudden lameness, often leaving owners concerned. Abscesses are typically caused by bacteria entering through small cracks or injuries in the hoof, leading to a build-up of pressure as the infection grows.

Signs of an Abscess:
• Sudden lameness or reluctance to bear weight
• Heat in the hoof or lower leg
• Increased digital pulse

What to Do:
• Contact your vet or farrier for advice
• Soak the hoof in warm water with Epsom salts to encourage drainage
• Keep the hoof clean and bandaged if necessary

Avoid digging into the hoof yourself - it’s always best to leave treatment to the professionals.

For equine emergencies or if you're unsure about a hoof abscess, call us at 0412 244 427.
