We skipped ahead a little from our last video, where Molly was practicing “leave it” indoors with food distractions.
This time, we added more difficulty:
✨ outside in the yard
✨ other dogs running around
✨ ball throwing (her BIG excitement trigger)
People teach “leave it” for lots of different reasons, but for Molly, my focus is helping her learn impulse control around the ball.
Instead of immediately reacting, grabbing, or fixating, she’s learning to pause, think, and check back in with me…even when exciting things are happening around her!
You’ll notice she watches the dogs and the ball, then chooses to reorient back to me, and I reward for making such cool choices 💛
This isn’t about “perfect obedience.”
It’s about building emotional regulation, thoughtful choices, and the ability to stay connected even around high-value distractions!
