Ancient survivors from the age of dinosaurs. They must be doing something right.

Crocodilians are one of the oldest reptile groups on the planet — true living fossils. They were here before the mammals. Before the birds. Before the extinction of the dinosaurs.

There are 26 recognised species of crocodilians alive today, divided into three families: alligators, true crocodiles, and gharials.

The estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles you'll meet at Marineland Melanesia are among the most powerful. Come discover why they've outlasted everything else on Earth.

Open 7 days, 9.30am-4pm on Green Island

Fifth generation, still calling Green Island home.
For more than 50 years, our family has cared for this place—its wildlife, its stories, and its history.
Marineland Melanesia isn’t a corporate attraction. It’s a family home for extraordinary animals, a guardian of Melanesian culture, and a living part of the Great Barrier Reef.

Meet Brooklyn, the fifth generation of our family. This holiday, bring your family to meet ours😊

We’re open daily, 9.30am–4pm, with daily presentations at 10.20am and 1.20pm.

At 5.8 metres and an estimated 120 years old, Cassius was the largest crocodile ever held in captivity — a Guinness World Record. But his greatest achievement wasn’t his size. Cassius adopted and raised baby Xena for 15 years. Estuarine crocodiles are notoriously cannibalistic. Cassius proved they are capable of unexpected grace. He passed away on 1 November 2024, just 16 days before his caretaker George Craig. Visit Cassius in the Legacy Room at Marineland Melanesia. Preserved and honoured.

Born in Peru. Stowed away on a banana boat as a teenager. Spent 16 years hunting crocodiles on Papua New Guinea’s Fly River. Collected 1,000+ pieces of Melanesian tribal art. Built a family business on Green Island that has thrived for over 50 years.

George Craig wasn’t your typical adventurer. He was humble, curious, and deeply respectful of the people and places he encountered. “I did it just for the adventure, really. It was all sort of a dream”

George passed away on 17 November 2024, at age 94. His legacy lives on — in Marineland Melanesia, in his collection, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
Over and out, George.

One of the most photographed spots on Green Island 📸

Tucked beneath the island canopy, the shipwreck entrance to Marineland Melanesia has become a familiar sight for generations of visitors since 1971

This is where the journey begins before giant crocodiles, sunlit aquariums and relics from the days of sail.

5 things you probably didn't know about Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat 🐊
🪘 We're home to over 1,000 pieces of tribal art collected from all corners of the world by our late founder, George Craig — and what's on display is only part of the collection.

🐠 Our historic aquariums are naturally lit by sunshine and have been a feature here since 1958!

🐢 Billie, our hawksbill sea turtle, has been with us since 1990. Hawksbills are critically endangered — fewer than 25,000 nesting females remain worldwide. Billie is their ambassador right here on the Great Barrier Reef.

🐊 Bronto is the largest of our big male crocs — over 4.7 metres and around 700 kg. But he's not unchallenged… Bulla and Whitee are vying for the title of King of Green Island.

🐊 Cassius, our legendary 5.8 m Guinness World Record holder, is now preserved and displayed in our Legacy Room — a tribute to an extraordinary life.

Come and discover it all.
