Smooch a Pooch Grooming Salon and School is owned and operated by Jill, a passionate dog lover and professional groomer. Jill offers a salon-based dog grooming service in Smithfield Cairns, as well as tuition for dog owners who wish to learn how to groom their pets correctly to help them cope with the tropical climate. Smooch a Pooch is also a Professional Dog Grooming School offering coaching for

dog lovers wishing to enter the Pet Industry as a groomer. The 4-Day Professional Dog Grooming Course is also available at DGS Imports in Shailer Park, Brisbane - it is run once every 8 weeks.

Welcome Class of July 2025. A small group of 3 this time at the Brisbane Level 1 Professional Groomers course.

Stephanie, Yennifer and Cassidy have done an amazing job so far this week.

All the lovely model dogs came for their groom this week, which meant that the ladies had to groom 2 dogs each per day.

It was a big ask, but they managed it.

Welcome to the Class of May 2025

I’m back at DGS Imports in Brisbane with 5 lovely ladies and one fella. It’s nice to welcome men to the course. It makes a nice change.

Todd, Nicole, Nicola, Shana, Wilma and Christina.

They are a very calm group with good energy and the dogs have been very relaxed in their presence.
☺️☺️
As usual, the dog models bounded in happy, with wagging tails. They really do enjoy their ‘big day out’ every 8 weeks for their modelling jobs

Day 3 March ‘25.
A challenging day for 3 of our students because we had 3 dogs who were really nervous and didn’t want their paws and faces groomed.
😓
Most dogs don’t like their paws touched. That’s normal. But it does make the Groomers job very difficult.
🤔
If you own a nervous dog, please help it by handling its paws and face daily. Then the dog becomes de-sensitised and makes the grooming task more pleasant for both parties.
🤩
Well done to Sam, Dee and Jade for persevering and completing the difficult tasks.

Day 2 of the March ‘25 grooming course.
The 6 students are doing well and today we welcomed 2 new dog models 🐶🐶

Welcome Geisha the mini Cavoodle and Olly the Miniature Poodle.

Sam, our only male student works quickly and efficiently and managed to groom both Olly and Geisha today.

Jade, Dee and Lara groomed our regular Maltese x Shi’zhu family:
Dad Tobby, mum Rosie and daughter Lily.

Ellen and Hayley worked side by side to groom our inseparable pair, Meeko the cavoodle and Miley the Shizhu.

Day 1 complete.

Today we welcomed:
🐾 Sam from Toowoomba who groomed Wally today. The only 2 boys in the class today 🙋‍♂️🐶

🐾 Hayley from Toowoomba who groomed Molly.

🐾 Sisters Dee and Lara worked with Sage and our new model Ruby.

🐾 Ellen groomed our lovely Lily the black and white Moodle.

🐾 Jade took care of our lovely Cav, Charlie.

A good day all round.

I just added a cute photo of little black Ebby who sat under Jades table and got showered with brown and white Cavalier hair.

Day 3 was quite a challenging day 🥴
🐾
We had 3 new dog models come to the school today.
They were reactive, matted and didn’t like being groomed.
😢
The student groomers did incredibly well ✅ I’m so proud of them.
😇
They worked as a team, helping each other and making the experience for the new dog models as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
🥰
At the end of the day, I asked them how they had felt doing such difficult grooms when they hadn’t even finished the course.
🤔
They all agreed that it had been a great experience; to be able to perform difficult tasks under supervision and learn how to tackle reactive dogs.
😁
The new dogs settled into the routine for the day and went home mat-free and looking amazing.

Well done ladies. You’re all going to be wonderful groomers out there in the industry.

You can tackle anything when you follow instructions, use your skills, take time to think and when you accept help from your colleagues.
