Don’t blame me for your failure and your dog’s behaviour.
Today I dealt with a dog that tried to bite me — and an owner who thought the problem was how I handled it.
This is a dog I’ve been washing for some time. It’s never been an easy dog — hyperactive, anxious, and poorly disciplined — but up until now it’s been manageable because of my years of experience handling dogs like this.
The owner moved from a 4-weekly to an 8-weekly schedule, after which the dog’s behaviour and attitude declined noticeably.
During a routine wash today, the dog escalated to repeated attempts to bite.
At that point, it becomes a safety issue.
I held the dog out of biting range and used a clear verbal interrupter — a firm “ahh” — each time it attempted to bite.
No aggression. No rough handling. Just immediate action to stop unsafe behaviour.
The wash was completed without injury.
After the wash, I was told I should have stopped when the dog started acting up — not out of concern for safety, but because the owner didn’t like the dog being upset.
That explains the behaviour.
If a dog learns that pushing back gets it out of a situation, it will keep doing it. It escalates.
Then came the familiar line:
“She’s never like this for us.”
Of course she isn’t.
At home, the dog isn’t being asked to tolerate what’s required during a wash. If it resists, the task stops. The dog learns — push back and you get your way.
Then when someone actually does the job properly and doesn’t back down, the dog reacts — and suddenly it’s the dog washer’s fault.
I’ve been doing this a long time. I’m qualified. This isn’t new to me.
I’m not a dog trainer — and I don’t claim to be.
I’m there to wash your dog.
But if a dog puts me at risk, I will use safe handling and clear verbal cues to prevent bites and finish the job if it can be done safely.
This is how dogs end up in shelters — when they aren’t taught boundaries and are allowed to develop behaviour that eventually becomes too much for people to handle.
That isn’t love.
Love is raising a dog properly.
So today, I made the decision not to return.
As a rule, I do not accept dogs that bite. Safety is non-negotiable.
If I can’t carry out the job safely, or I’m not supported in maintaining that safety, I won’t continue.
Because no wash is worth an injury.
And no dog benefits from being allowed to get worse.
