If you're wondering why I (Mel) have been quiet lately... I have been moving house. Unfortunately I have been having some security issues in the new house. Last night at 1.30am someone tried to break in through a rear window. They came in through the side gate and proceeded to try to break through a window. I was asleep at the time. I woke up to my corella Luke absolutely losing the plot. He was screaming "Who the F&!k are you?" At the top of his lungs. There's no sleeping through a Luke meltdown so needless to say I turned on lights. By now Luke was ringing like a telephone on speaker phone (this is unbelievably loud) and all the other birds were now sounding the alarm too. I could hear 2 men discussing this. "There's definitely someone in there, quick they're calling someone!!" And they ran off the way they came in. Parrots are the best alarm system. Luke gets extra scratches today for sure.

QUESTION: Do you think a bird needs a friend? Birds are social creatures, most birds in the wild live in a flock. One of the most common causes of behavioural problems in pet parrots is over-humanising a bird. They form sometimes inappropriate bonds with their humans, which can lead to frustration and aggression. One of the biggest myths that behaviourists deal with is that you can not bond with a bird that has friends of its own type. What are your thoughts?

NEW BLOGPOST: Bathing Pet Birds. This week, people were sharing the different ways that their birds like to bathe. Many people have no idea that large birds in particular, won't bathe adequately in their water bowls. Here's some information all bird owners should know!

Bathing is more than just a splashy pastime for pet birds - it's an essential part of their health and wellbeing. Whether you care for a tiny budgie or a chunky macaw (no body shaming here!) it's important you cater for their basic hygiene needs. Bathing can improve feather condition, respiratory he...

Try not to kill your mum's pets please. Most of the plants and flowers being marketed for Mothers Day are poisonous to animals and people have no idea.

Mother's Day is here again! For many, a lush indoor plant is the go-to-gift. Living, beautiful and thoughtful. These gifts ideas are prominent everywhere right now, from roadside stands, every Bunnings store and even the supermarket. If your mum shares her home with a beloved pet, that gorgeous gree...

DID YOU KNOW? Birds need to bathe regularly in order to maintain their feather integrity. Not all birds will consider their water bowl a bath (particularly larger birds), so you need to actively provide them with regular bathing opportunities. If you have a bird that seems to hate water, don't despair! Bathing is a trainable behaviour and we can help you train that.

Please don't feed wild birds. Someone intentionally tied string to this kookaburra's leg. This is happening repeatedly. Teaching birds that humans are friendly is incredibly dangerous for them and that's only one reason why you shouldn't do it. Don't feed wild birds.
