Senior pets often hide discomfort, so small changes matter. 🐾

😴 Increased sleeping
🐕 Difficulty climbing stairs
⚖️ Weight changes
💩Accidents indoors
🤔Confusion
👂👀Hearing or vision loss
🎾 Decreased interest in play

These can all be signs your elderly pet needs extra support. Regular vet checkups, softer bedding, joint support, and a consistent routine can help them stay comfortable and happy in their golden years 💛

🐾 Get to know Jade 🐾

(Slight conflict of interest here) — the one usually behind these social posts… so yes, I am in fact writing about myself 😅
From “baby nurse” back in 2017 to Head Vet Nurse now, it’s been quite the glow-up. And if you’ve ever been at reception, you’ll know I do love a good chat while I’m at it!
I recently completed my Diploma of Veterinary Nursing late last year. Growing up on a hobby farm and later working in an animal shelter, I’ve always had a strong passion for animal care — especially rescue animals and giving them second chances.

Q. What’s your favourite part of being a vet nurse?
A. Honestly, the variety and how involved we get to be in every aspect of care — from monitoring specialist surgeries and emergencies, to day-to-day clinic work, pathology, radiographs, and everything in between. Vet nursing really does involve a bit of everything, and I love being part of an animal’s journey through treatment and recovery, as well as supporting their humans along the way. I feel incredibly privileged to advocate for animals who can’t speak for themselves.

Q. Do you have a pet/s of your own? Tell us about them.
A. Yes! I have a rescue cat named Mishka who absolutely runs the house. He’s equal parts sweet and sassy, and has a talent for always appearing wherever I am. He also loves to bring me his toy otter that I bought him in Japan — either a sign of love, or he thinks I’m terrible at hunting and need some help 🤷‍♀️

Q. What’s your go-to snack during a busy shift?
A. I meal prep each week with healthy options… but when things get hectic, chocolate definitely becomes part of the treatment plan 🍫😅

Q. If you could give a piece of advice to pet owners, what would it be?
A. I'd have to agree with the other nurses — preventative care is always better than treatment. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, parasite control, a balanced diet, and dental care can prevent many serious and costly health issues. Another big one is learning your pet’s “normal” — their eating, drinking, toileting, energy levels, and behaviour — because even small changes can often be the first sign that something isn’t right.

🐔 Chicken Owners: Watch Out for Parasites! 🐔

Keeping backyard chickens happy and healthy means staying one step ahead of parasites. These pesky invaders can affect your flock’s wellbeing—and even egg production—if left untreated.

🔍 Common chicken parasites include:
• External: lice and mites (look for feather damage, itching, or pale combs)
• Internal: worms (signs can include weight loss, diarrhea, or fewer eggs)

💡 Prevention tips:
✔️ Keep coops clean and dry
✔️ Change bedding regularly
✔️ Provide dust baths for natural parasite control
✔️ Quarantine new birds before introducing them to your flock

🦟🐾 Fleas & Ticks: Know the Life Cycle, Protect Your Pet! 🐾🦟

Did you know that fleas and ticks go through multiple life stages—and most of their life cycle happens off your pet?

🔍 Flea Life Cycle:
• Eggs – Laid on your pet but fall into carpets, bedding, and grass
• Larvae – Hide in dark areas and feed on organic debris
• Pupae – Cocoon stage (very tough and hard to kill!)
• Adults – Jump onto your pet to feed and reproduce

👉 A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day—infestations build fast!

🕷️ Tick Life Cycle:
• Egg → Larva → Nymph → Adult
Ticks need a blood meal at each stage, meaning they can latch onto multiple hosts—including your pets (and even humans).

⚠️ Why Prevention Matters:
Fleas and ticks aren’t just annoying—they can transmit diseases and cause serious health issues like skin infections, allergies, and anemia.

💡 What You Can Do:
✔️ Use vet-recommended flea & tick prevention year-round
✔️ Wash bedding regularly
✔️ Keep your yard tidy and trimmed
✔️ Check your pet after outdoor adventures
