Preventing Pavement Burns

Why it matters:
During summer, pavement, asphalt, and even sand can reach 60–70°C — hot enough to cause severe paw pad burns within seconds.

Key Facts:
If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Test by placing your hand or bare foot on the pavement for 5 seconds — if it’s uncomfortable, avoid walking.
Paw pads can blister, crack, or peel from short exposure.
Metal ute trays, paths, and artificial grass also heat up dangerously.
Heat radiating from surfaces can also contribute to heat stroke.

Safer Walk Times:
Walk pets early morning or late evening
Choose grass or shaded routes
Carry portable water for both pet and owner
Consider protective booties for dogs if heat is unavoidable

If You Suspect a Burn:
Move pet off the hot surface immediately
Cool the paws gently with cool (not ice-cold) water for 10–15 minutes
Do not apply ointments or creams
Contact your vet clinic immediately

Keeping your dog safe from Halloween hazards doesn’t have to involve witchcraft or a magic spell. Use these tips to enjoy a safe Halloween with your dog.

Know what your dog can and can’t eat. Chocolate, raisins, sultanas, grapes, sugar-free lollies and gum that contain xylitol, macadamia nuts are all highly toxic to dogs. Make sure to let your family know that they should NEVER feed any of these foods to your pets no matter how much they beg or cast a spell on you with those puppy dog eyes!

Store chocolate and lollies safely. When your trick-or-treaters return home, keep your dog in a separate area while the kids sort through their haul. Instead of allowing kids to keep candy in their rooms or on the kitchen table, designate a space in a cupboard or the pantry where your dog can’t access it.

Don’t take your dog trick-or-treating. Your dog may find dropped candy or wrappers on the ground and gobble them up while you’re distracted.

Give pet-safe Halloween treats. Giving your dog a special treat can help them feel like part of the fun and avoid temptation. Try pieces of plain, air-popped popcorn, a toy filled with pureed pumpkin and kibble or a commercially made Halloween dog treat.

Pass on partygoing. If you’re hosting a Halloween bash, keep your pooch away from the festivities. If they want to say hello, keep their visit short and ask guests not to give them any treats.

Provide a safe space. If you’ll be opening your door to trick-or-treaters, keep your dog in another part of the house where they can’t dart outside or help themselves to the candy bowl.

Should the dreaded situation arise where your puppy or dog has gotten into a secret (or not so secret) stash of chocolate or any of the other toxic foods described above call us immediately at Bundoora Veterinary Clinic on 94672255 for further advice.

Have a happy Howlaween and keep your pets safe and sound 🐶 🐾 🎃

Today is a day to pause and celebrate the incredible work our vet nurses do every single day. Your care, skill, and compassion make such a difference to every patient and client who walks through our doors — and to each other.

We also want to take a moment to thank our amazing receptionists and support staff. You are such an important part of our team, helping everything run smoothly and allowing us to do what we do best — care for animals and their families.

Vet Nurse Day is a special reminder to recognise the heart and dedication that keeps our clinic going strong. Every bandaged paw, every comforted client, every long night or busy morning — it all matters.

Thank you for your hard work, your kindness, and your unwavering care all year round. We see it, we appreciate it, and today we celebrate you 🐾🫶🏼
