Here at Bowmans Taxidermy I occasionally get asked to mount farm animals. While I don’t work with pets these are different in that they are varieties of cattle, sheep or goats etc. this Texas Longhorn was one of 2 mounts I completed this week. The second was just horns mounted on timber burl but still look awesome as they have 2.1 mtr wide spread. The shoulder mount is huge in size and was really enjoyable to work on from skinning to tanning to completion of the final mount.

Today I sewed up and arranged the skin on this Longhorn steer. Huge job preparing a manikin and sizing it right. Shaving and tanning the skin myself as usual and then putting the mount together. Now it drys for a month and then the finish work and airbrush can bring it to life.

What makes a mount really come to life? It’s the eyes, if you nail the shape, detail and colour of the eyes and the rest of the mount is anatomically correct then it will look real, alive and just how it should be. That’s the difference between a great mount and an average one. This QLD red stag looks serene and relaxed but curious at the same time
