DEWORMING NEW ARRIVALS - Is it necessary?

Many of you would have heard that it is recommended to deworm every new horse that arrives into your property. And you've probably been advice to give them a Moxidectin-based wormer. The reason being to stop resistant parasites to land in your property.
NEW SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE DOESN'T AGREE WITH THAT:
1. 70% of the adult horses are low shedders, which means they only need deworming once a year. That means, approx the 70% of the horses that arrive into your property don't need deworming!
2. It's been demonstrated that the more wormers we give to a horse, the quicker we'll help those parasites to develop resistances. A recent study conducted in Australia has found resistances in 45% of the farms tested. Have you tested the efficacy of the wormers you use at your property?
3. The reason given some years ago about using Moxidectin was that it will also kill the immature stages of the parasite that are not reachable for other type of wormers. Nowadays this hasn't been proven and there's evidence of the opposite: those early stages won't die, but they'll recognise that wormer easily to start creating resistances faster!
4. We already have resistances to Moxidectin in Australia (studies published in the last 2 years) and the Egg Reappearance Period (the time between the last effective deworming and your horse shedding parasite eggs again in their faeces) for this active ingredient is also been seen to have shortened to 6 weeks. I'm sure you've read in your Moxidectin wormer "the ERP for this wormer is at least 14 weeks": Maybe in unicorns!! Certainly not in horses in 2024. The only places where may have an ERP longer than 9 weeks are farms where Moxidectin hasn't been used previously. Isn't that interesting??
5. This is not very common but it does happen, so the risk exists: If you deworm a horse that is carrying a huge number of parasites inside, if you use a Mectin-based wormer (Ivermectin, Abamectin, Moxidectin) that horse could die within the next week (because all the parasites die at the same time so they block the guts of the horse). The risk is higher in very young horses..

In conclusion, instead of deworming more often than necessary, TEST THE NEW ARRIVALS with faecal egg counts!! Deworm only the horses that need it, and with knowledge of what's best to give, based on the results.
