ā ļø BEACH SAFETY WARNING FOR PET OWNERS ā ļø
A trip to the beach can be a lot of fun for our furry friends, but it can also come with some very serious hidden dangers. Pets can easily ingest harmful items such as blue bottles, dead fish and marine life, food scraps, fishing gear, and litter washed up along the shoreline.
Our patient Nelson had a very rough weekend after eating a dead fish at the beach. He initially presented to us with an upset stomach, which didnāt immediately raise alarm bells. Thankfully, his vigilant owner was concerned there may have been fish hooks inside the fish Nelson had eaten.
After taking X-rays, we discovered Nelson had ingested TWO fish hooks. š
Nelson was urgently referred to VSOS for emergency surgery and is incredibly lucky to now be recovering at home with his dedicated owners by his side.
Please keep a close eye on your pets at the beach:
š¾ Prevent scavenging or eating washed-up marine life
š¾ Keep dogs on lead where possible
š¾ Watch for fishing hooks, bait, and litter
š¾ Seek veterinary attention promptly if your pet vomits, seems lethargic, or you suspect they may have eaten something unusual
A big thank you to Nelsonās owners for acting quickly ā their attentiveness made all the difference. š
