This might not look like anything special to the untrained eye. But this was a big moment for Chance. He 'doesn't like water'.

He was recently adopted after growing up in an apartment and not being socialised. Unsurprisingly, he struggles with new situations and barks and lunges at dogs on walks.

He doesn't realise it yet, but there's a lot of dog in his little kelpie frame. Bringing him out and building him up is a crucial part of his training.

Soon he will love the water and other things that worry him.

In July we trailed at the first German shepherd style sheep herding trial in QLD in over a decade.

Baby girl Brandy (10 months old) passed the Herding Instinct Test 🎉

Momma Jade (3.5 years old) passed the Herding Instinct Test AND one leg of the very tricky Pre Trial Test 🌟 She would have passed the second leg of the PT if I had handled the sheep more effectively.

Trialing in a dog sport for the first time is a huge learning curve and I think we did very well considering!

Preparing for this trial has taken a couple years and it's one of my favourite things to do with my dogs. The competing motivators challenge is huge with a dog and 12 sheep to guide all at once.

Brandy made her debut as a helper dog in my private lessons today!

She's now 10 months old and developing beautifully.

Couldn't adore her more if I tried.

Aggressive behaviour can make basic care feel nearly impossible.

Oakley struggled, avoided, snarled, and delivered a warning nip to his owner two years ago, when his ears were terribly infected and in need of cleaning and medication. Restraining him was impossible.

Trying to do anything he didn't want to do was always a losing battle.

He lunged and barked at everyone inside and outside the vet's office as well.

Hiding allergy tablets in food was the only option they could manage.

Today his owner was able to properly treat his ears for the first time ever. This was only their second session of working directly on this issue.

Having a 'difficult' dog doesn't mean you have to avoid their triggers forever. It also doesn't mean you need to spend months or years on counter conditioning protocols.

There is a way forward.

Proud of this team and excited to see their world continue to expand!

Adolescent dogs who haven't been desexed will experience hormonal shifts that may affect their behaviour. Suddenly they act like they've forgotten everything.

This is normal. Be patient, take it easy with the training, and let them adjust to the changes. This phase usually lasts a couple weeks. Their brain will be back online soon enough.

I love you Nandi.

We had a hell of a run together in this lifetime.

We both got lucky the day our eyes first met at the Christchurch dog pound. We travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres together and grew greyer and wiser together for 15 years.

The road was often rough and sometimes seemed nearby impassable, but we were both too strong willed to give up. In your younger years, you loved the occasional punch up and you weren't above biting a person to make them go away. Yet at the same time you were always so gentle with your humans and easygoing as we travelled and moved homes again and again.

Our perseverance paid off and the second half of our era was exultant. You became my dog training helper, a scent detection trial ribbon winner, an animal physiotherapy student demo dog, and companion for my new puppies. It was hard to believe you were still the same rough and tumble girl.

We saw it through together til the very end.

Thank you for everything.
