So, after only 4 hours sleep I was woken at 4am this morning. Miss Maple blessed us with the 1st of her 5 puppies. The last puppy arrived at approximately 8am.
What we didn't know is that all of them would be boys. She also threw us a curve ball with coat colours. 3 Silver dapples and 1 light shaded Red and 1 Red.
Sometimes no matter how much you know about the blood lines genetics and can predict coat colours you still get thrown curve balls.
Maple and puppies are doing well and Maple has taken to motherhood so well.
It's always a nerve wracking time with a maiden bitch, will she birth her puppies without interventions? Will she take to feeding and caring for her puppies? Or any other catastrophic event that could happen in between. Naturally we will closely monitor her over the next week to ensure she's happy, healthy and that her beautiful babies are growing and gaining weight as they should.
One of her little boys has a curved tail caused by a crowded womb. We have applied a splint to his tail and will monitor it daily in the hopes of correcting the curve. Ultimately it won't impact his spinal health he'll just be a quirky little man with a tail that tells a tale 😉
