Webinar next week

We are fortunate that H5 bird flu has not yet arrived in Australia – but we need to be ready this spring and summer.

H5 bird flu poses a significant and imminent threat to Australia's birds. The recent outbreaks on islands near Antarctica have heightened concerns, as they are now a mere 400km from Australian territories. An outbreak in Australia would be catastrophic for our birds, given that one in six Australian bird species is already threatened with extinction.

Join Tanya Loos, BirdLife Australia’s Avian Influenza Response Coordinator and Chris Purnell, Manager Wetland and Migratory Shorebirds as we cover the essentials in this one-hour session.

Register for Birds Meet: Preparing for H5 Bird Flu, to be held on Microsoft Teams on Thursday, 2 October at 6pm AEST.

Yesterday I caught up with Quokka - she has had a recent toe op so we worked on cooperative care and also progressed her muzzle training. All dogs should be muzzle trained, in the event that they need it, it will be one less stress.

So we’ve had a lot going on here the past couple of weeks.

Poco had a swollen toe. He wasn’t overly bothered but limped when walking on uneven ground.
Cytology indicated some nasty cells, so he had his toe amputated on Wednesday. Now we wait for his histology results. I changed his bandage today and his wound looks awesome.

Linc developed PUPD (drinking and peeing excessively). Unfortunately his pseudomonas infection from prepuce made its way to his bladder. He then had more of a work up and they found bladder stones. They were removed Wednesday night and I picked him up Thursday. Most of the stones have gone to the USA to test what they are, and one has gone locally to culture.

His infection is a nasty bacteria that is resistant to most antibiotics. We are using an injectable antibiotic (it stings) every 8hours. He goes back next week for another cystocentesis to check for bacteria.

Alice the Guinea pig that had lump removal a couple of weeks ago - had some wound break down (it was under a lot of tension). It’s looking good now.

This has been on my list to post for a while.

Just a reminder, that if hiding your pets meds in food, use food that is not their usual meal.

It’s very easy to create a food aversion.

Instead use something out of context of meal time (perhaps meatballs, cream cheese etc). And practice feeding these to your pet regularly without medication but to add some “texture” to it (as lots of dogs will sift through foods looking for pills because they haven’t had an experience where extras were good). I add in kibble/rice bubbles etc to a lump of meat or wet food etc.

When one dog gets meds here…. Every other dog also gets their lumpy meatballs too.

We can also train our pups to take meds, and we can give them by mouth directly too, just make sure to make it worthwhile afterwards….. even better, sometimes randomly pill a small piece of kibble etc.

That way it’s a weird experience but not a scary one.

I love free shaping and watching the animals confidence grow. It is however really important to break everything down super small to prevent frustration, provide plenty of reinforcement and keep sessions short. This is something I’ve been playing with all the pups, but in particular Brian.

He can be worried by things going over his head…. So why not shape him to put something over his own head. Giving him control.

Looks good…. If I’ve got my times right it will be 8am Thursday morning Brissie time

This is something I am very passionate about.

As an animal owner and trainer it is important to recognise that not all behaviour problems can be modified with training alone.

It is important that trainers identify those animals that are under duress or not responding as predicted to behaviour modification and refer to veterinarians with recognised behaviour qualifications.

Once an animal has been referred it does not mean that a trainer won't be continuing to work with the animal. We do. However, this will be as a three pronged team - the owner, the veterinarian and the trainer working together with the animal to achieve the best result possible.

It is important to recognise animals as individuals and as such not all will respond the same to any training technique implemented. This is where it is important as a trainer to have a toolbox...

Take the quiz … how did you do?

Take this quiz on minimizing the motivation behind growling behavior in patients to help reduce the escalation of aggression and improve the human-animal bond.

My monthly Sunday off! Yay.

Lucy and I went to the library to return a book and collect another. And then we went on a one on one walk. Just us.

This afternoon we had Cousin Timmy’s birthday cake and finished bones for dinner.

Linc ate his ear fluff on a previous bone, so now he gets a pony tail.

And last but not least Alice’s last syringe feed for today (she had surgery for lump removal Friday and unfortunately broke the tip of a tooth at same time). She’s not complaining about the syringe food though.
