Agility Games Champion (ANKC)

AG CH, G CH, T CH, RO CH Shadow ADM ADO JDM JDO GDM SDM SPDM CDX RM RAE TKS

Last night beautiful Shadow did a lovely smooth clear clean GDM run to achieve the long awaited final Q for his Agility Games Championship title.

Shadow now has achieved 5 championship titles in multiple dog sports and codes:

- Agility Games Champion - ANKC
- Agility Champion - ANKC
- Agility Champion - ADAA
- Tracking Champion - ANKC
- Rally Obedience Champion - ANKC

Shadow has won and been runner up in agility state championships, represented the state and competed at nationals and achieved umpteen Q cards and titles across agility, obedience, rally, tricks, herding and tracking.

Our years of competing together have been filled with LOTS of SUPER FUN play and training, challenges and bumps to overcome, and more so, of the recent 5 years, a lot of amazing successes and always pure joy working and running together as a team.

I so so dearly love beautiful Shadow (aka Mr Naughty spots Fluffy Pants) and all that he brings to my world. Shadow truly is so perfect on all levels and is a wonderful teacher for me in everyday life and every sport and activity we turn our hands and paws to together.

I love you so much beautiful Shadow 🐾💕💜

"Adolescence is a time for patience, not push"

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

For my non-agility friends or those who are not on Qld agility FB 😊 🐾💕

I am so very proud of Shadow and Wegz, who, based on their competition results for the past 10 months, have been selected to represent Qld in the state team event at the Australian Agility Nationals, to be held in Sydney NSW in July 2024.

Shadow will be competing and Wegz is the Qld reserve in the event of a team member withdrawing due to illness, injury or other.

Each Australian state and territory may enter a team of 6 dogs in the team event, which is run at the start of the 5-day Agility Nationals.

Each dog will complete 1 run through an agility course and then 1 run through a jumping course which is the same course for all competing team members from all states and territories.

The results from each dog in the team are added together and the total score for the team is scored against the other competing teams from across Australia.

In agility there are no guarantees in each and every run that you do with a dog, as ANYTHING can, and does happen on the day, however we will be doing the absolute best that we can to represent Qld professionally and to the best of our abilities.

Tunnel caps

Some years ago I designed and had these tunnel caps made for my 5 tunnels as my equipment sits out on my arena all year round.

The tunnel caps are designed to prevent anything entering the tunnel for the dogs safety.

My tunnel caps live on my tunnels at all times unless lm training or teaching, which is when l quickly slip them off then refit them when lm finished.

Today, l had a large Eastern Brown snake come across my grass arena just after l had been training, which was a bit unnerving as we had literally just run a course.

I redirected the EB away from my dogs, who were sitting in their crates, with a long weave pole and the EB immediately slid into a nearby 6m tunnel and then out the other end and off into the paddock.

After stripping the tunnel of the covering tarp and thoroughly checking in and around the tunnel and all the tunnel bags, the tunnel caps went straight back onto the ends of the tunnel.

I wanted to share this in the hope it may benefit others, as l have had quite a few people commenting on my FB post today or messaging me to say that they have never thought to check inside their tunnels.

This applies equally to both outdoor and indoor aren
arenas which are generally not 100% sealed at ground level

How do you say, ‘thank you’, in a big enough way, to someone who gives so much to every single person that she teaches!
HUGEST thank you Megan Bell for another AMAZING weekend of watching, listening, learning, running, running and running some more😊
When you are having so much fun, three days simply flies right on by, and I, like you I am sure, are ready for a good long rest and a LOT more ZZZzzzzzz hours than have been slept over the past 3 nights combined. My little legs are totally ‘done and depleted’ and can no longer run, but WOW did my 3 boys and I have an absolute BLAST working your beautiful open flowing well-spaced courses, that simply 'led' the dogs to where they needed to go, providing my handling was on time and I was in position – simply exhilarating, inspirational and FUN.
Very special appreciation to the four paw fur kids that were all absolute SUPERSTAR PUPSTARS and deserve extra of everything for the wonderful 1000% work they put in xx
Every single handler that attended the three days went away with that ‘never-ending’ list of homework getting a whole lot longer and the desire to become the best team mate they can for the canine mates. All the auditors that came along each day, took away a wealth of knowledge and information to apply to their handling and training of their agility dogs.
Thank you to everyone for being so supportive to colleagues and friends, encouraging others, and being helpful throughout the three days and for your support to my small business.
LOTS to do between now and October when Megan returns to a fully booked out already seminar here in SE QLD 🙂
