Bernedale Kennels, Saint Bernards of Supreme Quality.

Bernedale Kennels, Saint Bernards of Supreme Quality. BERNEDALE KENNELS:- Australia's Inaugural Master Breeders of Quality Saint Bernard's! Together they imported many Saints, from Europe and also the USA.

Founded in New Zealand in 1989, Bernedale Kennels was influenced with the wonderful import Saints from Brit Marit Halverson's Bernegardens Kennels of Norway.
1998 saw Jim jump the Tasman and relocate in Victoria, Australia. Bernedale continued with the amalgamation of Debbi and John Egglestone's Bronbashei Kennels. After the turn of the century further success was embraced, with credit now being g

iven to the influence of both Stoans and Cache Retreat Kennels, from the USA.

2002 saw Tess join us at Bernedale:- thus the introduction of Clumber Spaniel's and in 2007 we welcomed our first Clumber Spaniel litter. Saint Bernard's and Clumber Spaniels continued to dominate our lives, with much success in the show ring and joy in our home. Debbi's early passing in 2009 left a huge dent, her knowledge, expertise and keen eye for a good Saint or Clumber was invaluable. In 2010 the majority of the Bernedale Saints were living in Queensland. Having had numerous Bernedale Saints campaigned in Qld over the past 15 years, in 2013 Bernedale transferred their Kennel to Queensland in partnership with Frank and Lesley Newman. Saint Bernard's having always been the primary breed, were once again the only breed focused on. Jim and John, together with Lesley and Frank, continue Debbi's dream! Bernedale:- Simply the Best.

In the frozen jaws of the Swiss Alps, where blizzards swallow men whole, one shaggy savior wrote history with his paws. Barry der Menschenretter ("Barry the People-Saver") wasn't just a good dog—he was a four-legged revolution in alpine rescue, a 19th-century St. Bernard whose deeds blurred the line between animal and angel.

The Great St. Bernard Pass wasn't a scenic route—it was a gauntlet. Pilgrims and merchants risked the 8,100-foot altitude where winds howled at -30°C. Here, Benedictine monks bred barrel-chested guardians with snowshoe paws and a sixth sense for disaster. Among their canine brotherhood, one stood apart: Barry, who between 1800-1812 developed an almost supernatural gift for finding the lost.

His methods were textbook-defying:
- Digging through avalanche debris with surgical precisio
- Licking unconscious travelers awake
- Carrying children on his back like a living sled
- Leading monks through whiteouts when human senses failed

The famous brandy barrel? Pure Victorian fantasy. Barry's real tools were his 170-pound warmth and a stubborn refusal to quit. His most legendary rescue—spending hours thawing a frozen boy against his body before transporting him to safety—became the gold standard for alpine rescue.

History nearly robbed Barry of his happy ending. A fabricated tale claimed the 41st victim mistook him for a wolf, but archives confirm he retired to Bern, dying peacefully at 14. Today, his carefully preserved body at Bern's Natural History Museum isn't morbid—it's a sacred relic of interspecies devotion.

The monks still keep a "Barry" at the hospice, not for rescues (helicopters took over in 1955), but as a living monument. Because true heroism isn't about strength—it's about the will to plunge into a storm when someone else's life hangs in the balance.

*********DOG BEDS********
So many people are asking me about Dog Beds right now, I have one bed here from Barney Beds and 4 others from Dazy Dog.
The quality of both is equal, however the price differences are huge!
My first one was a Barney Bed, which I was lucky to purchase second hand, BUT the price of the covers was a total killer for me.
Yes, I have purchased a cover, because having a slobbery breed, the bed was useless to me without it, but that was it for me!
I was then introduced to Dazy Dog and I am now converted!
From Dazy Dog the biggest bed you can buy is an X Large, which will comfortably accomodate 2 Saints.
The Barney Bed I have is a XXLarge, which is 2 metres long and the one you have seen in my pictures tonight.
Dazy Dog offer a bundle package where you can also include an extra cover in your package, this I would strongly suggest, as the extra cover is a Godsend!
Dazy Dog also offer a built in water proof liner, at Barney Beds this is an extra.
Dazy Dog give free postage, and with Barney Beds, it is an extra amount in the XLarge and XXLarge sizes only.
The bolster sides on the Barney Beds are slightly higher and slightly wider than on the Dazy Dog beds, but this is certainly not necessary and the bolsters on the Dazy Dog beds serve the purpose very adequately.
I did a comparison chart up 12 months ago when I bought my first Dazy Dog Bed and the comparisons were done on the XLarge size, but I guess the prices may be different from both companies by now.
Dazy Dog do currently have a huge Sale starting Thursday 12th June.
The COVER ALONE on the Barney Bed I have, cost me MORE than what I could have bought a complete Dazy Dog bed AND bundle package for!!!!
So now I only purchase from Dazy Dog and as we move our beds around here the dogs are photographed on different beds at different times.
I will include some of the pics here to give you all something to work on, along with the comparison chart I did 12 months ago.
I have also included a pic of the Barney bed pricing on the XXLarge today, and then it’s up to you to choose which company you wish to buy from.
The cost of the extra covers is the biggest after sale killer for me on the Barney Beds, especially so when we found the quality on both to be equal and Dazy Dog include the extras that Barney add on!
Hope this helps!

Enough of baby pics, here are our two golden oldies, both now desexed and just enjoying life being spoilt, as they all should be in their twilight years.
Miss Annabelle will be turning 11 this year and Miss Violet is 7 and 1/2.
Both girls easily attained their Australian Championship titles, Annabelle only ever had 1 litter and sadly Violet didn’t produce anything for us, but her sister is the Grand Dam of our newest babies.
Both Annabelle and Violet have perfect house manners and are passing their good habits on to young Beth, who does seem to be grasping the success of attaining all the do’s and dont’s to also be a house Saint.

Both girls are in training today!

The kids all got new Teddy’s this morning, thanks to Aunty Sandy!
I think Willie was too scared to put his down in case his demonic sister came flying through the fence and grabbed it from him.
Pearl was happy with hers until she realised she wasn’t so special and her brother and sister were also on the receiving end.
All raised the same and they have such different natures already!

Greedy girl Pearl not happy!

Ursula and Willie are having fun, Pearl has abandoned hers! Not happy when she saw her brother and sister got one too, she thought she was special!
