To all Dachshund Owners: PLEASE DON'T breed just because you can.

Please don't add to the misery of IVDD, Pes Varus, SDMD or PRA by breeding just because you can. Think twice before going ahead. Help reduce the numbers of dachshunds and their families suffering through illnesses that could have been avoided with the necessary DNA tests and screening.

To Dachshund BUYERS and those LOOKING to add a dachshund puppy to your family:

Choose your breeder carefully. Ask if the parents have been DNA tested, find a show breeder (they've bred to breed standard) instead of pet owners who don't go to such lengths, if any.

COLOURED/DILUTE dachshunds, such as whites, blues and Isabellas are more likely to suffer IVDD due to being bred for colour and not to standard. They can't be shown as these colours are not approved in Australia so their shape / standard doesn't matter to the breeder. Just the colour. Don’t pay extra for “fashionable” colours. Dachshunds are not a fashion statement.

The cost of an ANKC registered pup is usually much the same as one from a pet breeder or a backyard breeder. Even if the ANKC pup costs more initially, you will be saving yourself costs on vet bills if your pup does develop a major illness in the future that could have been prevented if the parents were screened.

We’ve been learning from mum and dad who sit and wait for their dinner before they’re told “ok”, and then they can have it. We’ll work on the waiting part, but for now at 7 weeks old I’ll take the sitting patiently while it’s being prepared 🥰
