No horse should be sore footed after a trim, unless they are already showing pathology and presenting with pre-existing soreness. However as trimmers we should be relieving painful presentations. If your farrier or trimmer makes your horse sore or tells you it’s natural after a trim. Replace them!!!!!!

This little pony had classic slipper toe from founder and not being trimmed on a regular basis. He was in the desert in SA and what saved him was the harsh ground he was walking on. He would go and join the local brumbies and do long miles with them. If he had have been paddock bound. He would have probably have been needing euthanasia.

Ponies are susceptible to be let go for a long time and end up with overrun hooves that become extremely uncomfortable. Not really functional and problematic. This little pony hadn’t been trimmed for some time (months).

As trimmers that have learnt the wild horse model of trimming, provide a natural trim. We only take off the sole what would normally be lost. We don’t cut down to the raw sole plane.

We then also only take off wall that would normally be lost in the wild. Hooves are not meant to be flat. They need to be encouraged to grow passive quarters like a wild horse.

“White line disease” or “Seedy Toe” is not a bacterial infection. It also does not happen from the ground up.

It is a failure of the union of the laminar which is caused by laminitis at the coronet. If a horse has constant seedy toe issues. It has recurrent laminitis and simply needs the horses diet to be managed to reduce the amount of sugars and toxins that is consumed.

The toe “whirl” especially is a sign of laminitis.

What do we do? We trim normally and ignore the pathology. We don’t resect it or pack it. We address the dietary causes. Once that is done we just trim it out as the hoof grows and be patient.

Blood in the white line indicates old laminitic episodes.

Long toes and under run heels don’t only look bad but are bad for the horse. I see a lot of horses with this. This horse yesterday had severely under run heels and very long toes. The heels were also very low leaving the frog on the ground. The frog should not be weight bearing as people believe.

This horse was trimmed and brought more upright on their hooves to see the hoof angle significantly reduce to a close to normal angle.

This takes the pressure off the DDFT and the navicular bone.
