🍂🐾 Autumn Pet Care: As the Weather Cools🐾🍂

As autumn sets in and the temperatures start to drop, it’s a great time to make a few small adjustments to keep your pets comfortable and healthy, leading into winter.

Cooler weather can be a welcome relief after summer, but it can also highlight joint stiffness in older pets or make some pets less eager to get out for their usual walks. You might notice your pet preferring warmer, cosier spots around the house or taking a little longer to warm up on chilly mornings.

This is also a good time to stay on top of regular vet check-ups, especially if a senior, provide balanced exercise, and maintain a healthy weight for your pet to help support your their wellbeing as the seasons change.

A warm bed, a cosy coat if needed, and a bit of extra TLC can go a long way this time of year 💛

If you’re ever unsure how your pet is coping with the seasonal change, we’re always here to help. Call us on 3269 2223 or swing by for a chat.

🐾 Senior Pets Deserve Extra Care 🐾

As our beloved pets grow older, their bodies naturally begin to slow down and things don’t always function as they once did. Just like us, ageing can bring changes in mobility, energy levels, and behaviour. Sometimes these changes happen gradually and can be easy to overlook. You may also notice lumps and bumps appearing, coats thinning or no longer looking as shiny and healthy, or your pet simply not seeming quite like their usual self.

At Brighton Veterinary Surgery, we encourage our clients to take a moment to think about their senior fur babies and consider having them assessed — or reassessed — to ensure they remain comfortable and supported throughout their golden years. Early detection of age-related issues can make a big difference in maintaining quality of life.

To help support our senior patients, we are currently offering 20% off our Senior Pet Health Checks for the months of April and May.

When calling to book your appointment, please let our team know that your pet is a senior and mention any concerns you may have — particularly things like:

• Reduced mobility or stiffness
• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Changes in behaviour
• New lumps or bumps
• Changes in coat condition
• Appetite or weight changes

Our friendly veterinarians will take the time to assess your pet and provide guidance on how best to support them moving forward.

With the cooler months approaching, now is the perfect time to ensure your senior companion is comfortable and well managed before the cold really sets in.

Your pet has spent a lifetime giving love — let’s help them enjoy their senior years feeling their very best. 🐶🐱

📞 Call the clinic on 3269 2223 to book your Senior Pet Check today.

Did you know?

Weight management is crucial for your pet’s health.

Just a little extra weight can put added strain on your pet’s joints, heart, and organs. It can also increase the risk of conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and respiratory issues — and may even shorten their lifespan.

The tricky part? Weight gain often happens gradually, so it can be hard to notice.

Regular weigh-ins, portion control, and the right balance of diet and exercise can make a huge difference. And if you’re ever unsure what a healthy weight looks like for your pet, we’re always happy to help guide you.

Keeping your pet at a healthy weight means more energy, better mobility, and a happier, healthier life. if you would like some help with your pets weight and diet plan call us on 3269 2223 or drop in to the clinic for a chat! 💛🐶🐱

Radiography for Reggie!

Handsome Reggie came in for a dental procedure — and while he was with us, we also took the opportunity to perform x-rays on his legs to check out a recently noticed limp.

Dental care is such an important (and often overlooked) part of our pets’ overall health. Just like us, plaque and tartar can build up over time, leading to gum disease, pain, and even issues affecting other organs if left untreated. That’s where dental procedures and x-rays come in — they allow us to properly assess what’s happening both above and below the gum line.

And since Reggie was already under anaesthetic, it was the perfect time to investigate his limp further and make sure there was nothing concerning going on beneath the surface as well.

We’re happy to report he handled everything like a champ 💛🐶

If you’ve noticed any changes in your pet — whether it’s their teeth, movement, or behaviour — it’s always worth getting it checked. Early intervention makes all the difference!

💉Paws up for Pockets 💉

Little Pockets popped into the clinic for their vaccination visit — and what a superstar! 🌟 Brave, calm, and rewarded with plenty of cuddles (and maybe a treat or two 😉).

Vaccinations are such an important part of keeping our pets healthy and protected. They help prevent serious diseases and keep not only your pet safe, but also the wider pet community.

Pockets handled it like a pro, and we’re so proud! 💖

If your pet is due for their vaccines, feel free to get in touch with us — we’re always happy to help keep your furry family members in tip-top shape 🐶🐱

🐾💕Meet Holly & Zoe 💕🐾

These two gorgeous girls are litter mates — yes, actual sisters — but you’d never guess it at first glance! While they share the same mum and were born in the same litter, they look completely different, and it often surprises people.

So how does that happen?

It comes down to genetics — especially dominant and recessive genes.

Each puppy inherits two copies of every gene (one from each parent). Dominant genes are the ones that show up even if only one copy is present, while recessive genes only appear if a puppy inherits two copies of that same gene.

This means both Holly and Zoe received different combinations of genes from their parents. One may show a dominant coat colour or pattern, while the other expresses a recessive trait that was “hidden” in the parents’ genetics. That’s why siblings can look so different, even though they come from the same litter!

It’s a beautiful reminder that being related doesn’t mean being identical… and that differences are something to celebrate 🐶✨

🐾 Picture-Perfect Roxie! 🐾

🐾 Meet Mac! 🐾

Mac came into the clinic so we could check out a lump on his foot 🐶👀.

Being on top of new or growing lumps and bumps is really important for your dog. While many are harmless, some can indicate infections, cysts, or even cancers. Early assessment means we can act quickly if treatment is needed and keep your pet healthy and comfortable.

Mac was a brave patient, and we’re glad his lump is being closely monitored. Regular checks like this give peace of mind and help catch any issues before they become serious 💛
