Domino Cuckoo Bee - Native solitary bee
Guessing that someone thought these amazing bees had a resemblance to dice with their white spots on their black fur.
Thanks again Graeme Swinbourne for sharing his photos. The solitary bees obviously love his geisha girl plant flowers.

Neon Cuckoo Bee - Australian Native

A stunning iridescent blue and back coloured bee. They are solitary bees.

Just like Cuckoo birds they lay their eggs in the nests of Blue Banded Bees to eat the provisions placed in the nests by those bees.

Thanks again to Graeme Swinbourne for his wonderful photos.

Beeutiful Big Blue Banded Bees

These Australian native bees are truly beautiful. They are buzz pollinating solitary bees (please see previous post about Teddy bear bees for an explanation of what constitutes solitary bees that are buzz pollinators).
Thanks once again Graeme Swinbourne for sharing your excellent photos.

Teddy Bear Bees - Australian Native Bee

Cute name for a very cute bee.
They are buzz pollinators meaning they blast flowers with air from their wings to release pollen from flowers that have antlers holding the pollen like tomato flowers.
They are also solitary bees. Unlike social bees (honey bees and native stingless bees) which have a single fertile queen and thousands of sterile female workers each female solitary bee is fertile and they have individual nests to lay their eggs.

Photos of these cute bees were taken by Graeme Swinbourne. Thank you Graeme for sharing.

Hive Rescue for Brighton Health Hub

We have successfully rescued a native stingless beehive from a lightning rod pit at the Brighton Health Hub which is on Brisbane’s northern bayside.

After recovering for a few weeks at our home we installed the hive back in the Hub’s Wellbeing Garden.

The lightning rod pit is much like a water metre box with a steel rod in the centre. (Photo attached)

The bees are Tetragonula Hockingsi.
As can be seen from the photos there is a healthy brood with newly covered egg sacs and open egg sacs clearly visible.

We hope the Health Hub community enjoy their bees for years to come as we have a enjoyed carrying out a successful rescue and giving the hive a long term home.

It’s time
After nearly 15 years of running my native stingless bee hobb/business it is time for me to close the business side and to just focus on my hobby.
I will no longer be providing services like hive splitting and honey harvesting and will no longer be providing products like hive boxes and roofs.

If you need and assistance with your bees I would highly recommend Steve Flavel at Clontarf on the Redcliffe Peninsula. He is a friendly helpful expert in keeping native stingless bees.
You can contact Steve through his impressive website at Hivecraft.com.au

It has been an enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling period in my life. I have had the pleasure of making many new friends and meeting hundreds of lovely people.

I never dreamt that nearly 6,000 people would chose to follow my page or that I would have a book published.

Going forward I plan to do a lot more fishing and continue to enjoy my grandchildren and my bees.

Thank you everyone, cheers and regards
Greg

Nashville State School Log Hive

We have donated a rescued log hive to some of our grandchildren’s school for the school’s Garden Club
After transporting the hive to the school we did a lunch time presentation to the garden club members. Which was enjoyable for us as much as for the kids with a couple of display hives with perspex viewing panels helping to explain to the kids what is going on inside their log hive.
The kids asked great questions with one asking if my phone message bank starts with the words “buzz buzz”
Payton and Bailey the two older grandchildren in the photo helped explaining what was going on in the display hives for the other kids. They did a great job.

Strange Hive Visitor - A bloody big rat

Nothing for the bees to worry about as it is night time and the bees are safely nestled in their hive.
The rat may even be enjoying the warmth generated by the hive to maintain brood temperature.
Thanks for the photo Ray
