From 1 February 2026, the rebate scheme for goat and lamb eID tags will expand to include all NLIS accredited tag colours.
Under the NLIS system, tag colours help identify:
• whether an animal was born on their property (breeder) or purchased (post breeder) and
• for breeder tags, the animal’s year of birth, using a nine colour cycle.
Currently, the rebate only applies to four tag colours. This extension means all colours will now be eligible.
This change gives producers more flexibility to buy the tags they need before the scheme ends on 30 June 2026, including purchasing ahead for future lamb and kid births.
Reminder: Mandatory electronic identification for all sheep and goats begins 1 January 2027.
The Rebate Scheme opened on 1 June 2024 and will close on 30 June 2026.
