❄️ **Why Dogs Still Need Grooming in Winter** ❄️

As the weather cools down, many owners decide to leave their dog's coat longer for winter. While that can be a great option, it often means **more maintenance, not less**.

🐾 **Longer clips need more brushing**
A longer coat can provide extra insulation, but it can also tangle and matt much more easily. Winter coats, jumpers, damp grass, mud, and less frequent bathing can all contribute to knots forming close to the skin.

Many owners are surprised to learn that a longer winter clip often requires more brushing at home and more regular grooming appointments to keep the coat comfortable and healthy.

🐾 **Double-coated breeds need maintenance too**
Breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, German Shepherds, and many others rely on their natural double coat to help regulate temperature.

The undercoat acts like insulation, helping keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. However, when dead undercoat builds up, air can no longer move properly through the coat. The result can be a heavy, compacted coat that is less effective at regulating temperature and less comfortable for the dog.

Regular deshedding and coat maintenance helps remove loose undercoat while keeping the protective outer coat intact.

🐾 **Comfort matters**
Winter grooming isn't about making dogs look pretty. It's about keeping them comfortable.

A well-maintained coat:
✅ Stays cleaner and dries faster
✅ Has fewer mats and tangles
✅ Allows the skin to breathe
✅ Regulates temperature more effectively
✅ Makes grooming less stressful for your dog

At Dalilove Dog Grooming, I always work at your dog's pace. Whether your dog needs a longer winter clip or help maintaining a thick double coat, the goal is the same: a happy, comfortable dog who feels good in their own skin.

After all, dogs don't stop needing grooming just because it's winter. 💛🐶

Conventional grooming and Understanding how a grooming appointment could look for your dog..

STEP ONE
I was put into the car and was ensure of where I was going, when I arrived it was a new environment. A person greeted us - who I have never meet before.
STEP TWO
My owner then left and I started to become nervous and anxious.
STEP THREE
This person puts me on a surface it’s slippery, high up and I can’t get down. I desperately try to tell the lady
I want to get down by trying to jump off the edge but she then puts a rope around my neck to stop me.
STEP FOUR
I start moving around the table but the thing around my neck is restricting me - the lady then adds another rope under my belly so now I can’t turn around.
STEP FOUR
I can feel my fear taking control so I show my teeth to pre warn the lady that i feel threatened and I MUST get down.
STEP FIVE
The groomer puts a plastic uncomfortable thing over my mouth and now I can’t communicate

Now STEP SEVEN is where the dog either shuts down and accepts it had no choice or continues to fight throughout the groom

If they shut down this can be damaging for their wellbeing, have long lasting effects to their health and can change their whole behaviour once home. If this continues every few weeks when taken grooming this can cause long lasting damage. IF A GROOMER SAYS “ they was fine once muzzled they calmed down” they are NOT fine if you have had to muzzle them….

This is not to put others down it is to try and educate dog owners that research is essential . Just like you do for your child going to a new school…

Research your options, ask the groomer to stay so you can see how it works.. ask questions. So many people say to me “ I had a feeling on drop off” GO with that feeling .. a good groomer will listen, explain and make you feel at ease 🙌

Your dog might not hate the groomer
Sometimes they just remember the last groom felt uncomfortable.

Skipping appointments often means:
• more knots
• longer grooms
• more brushing and handling
• more standing still
• more stress

Then suddenly you have a dog that:
• hates brushing
• spins on the table
• becomes touch sensitive
• or seems anxious at grooming

That’s usually not a “bad” dog.
Often it’s just a dog that has been uncomfortable for too long.

Regular grooming is not just about looks.
It helps keep grooming familiar, predictable and low stress.

Most dogs do best on a regular 4–8 week schedule, depending on coat type and home maintenance.

The goal is always comfort before the coat becomes a problem 🤍

🍂 From “don’t touch me” to “this is actually okay” 🍂

All three photos are of the same dog, just at different stages of the journey.

📸 1st photo – 1st session
A coat that had built up over time, thick undercoat sitting in there, hard to manage… and a dog that really didn’t enjoy being brushed.

📸 2nd photo – 5th session
We’re starting to get somewhere. The coat is loosening, less bulk, easier to work through… and a dog that’s beginning to tolerate the process.

📸 3rd photo – 10th session
This is where maintenance kicks in. The coat is under control, light and manageable… and the biggest change? The dog.

🐾 This dog used to hate brushing and would bite.
Now he stands happily, accepts the brushing and trimming of his feet, and is much more relaxed during the bath and blow dry.

No forcing. No rushing. Just working at his pace, building trust over time.

✨ And it shows:
• Happier, more relaxed behaviour
• More comfortable in his body
• Easier grooming for him and for me
• A coat that stays under control instead of getting overwhelming

This is what consistent, gentle grooming can do.
Not just a better coat, but a better experience for the dog.

At Dalilove Dog Grooming, that’s always the goal 💛🐶

Why Puppies of All Ages Need Grooming Training, Not “Full Grooms”

Grooming isn’t just about a haircut, it’s a skill that needs to be learned. The best time to start is early, with calm, positive experiences that build confidence rather than overwhelm.

🐶 What breeders and owners can start early

From the time puppies are a few weeks old, or as soon as they arrive in their new home, simple steps can help prepare them for grooming later on:

gentle handling of paws, ears, face, belly, and tail

short, positive brushing with soft tools

introducing everyday grooming sounds in a low-stress way

creating a routine around calm handling rather than “grooming sessions”

These early experiences are about familiarity and trust, not perfect results.

🐾 Why training comes before full grooms

A full groom involves extended standing, close handling, and working around sensitive areas. For many puppies, this is too much too soon.

Training-based sessions focus on:

standing still for short periods

learning to relax during handling

building positive associations with grooming tools

✂️ Setting puppies up for success

Rushing into full grooms can create stress and avoidance later on. Taking time to train first helps puppies grow into dogs who can be groomed calmly and safely.

Puppies of all ages can learn these skills, with patience and consistency.

At Dalilove, grooming training is about confidence, calm, and positive experiences, not perfection.

Did You Know? Dogs Learn From How Things End

Dogs don’t remember experiences as a whole the way we do. They tend to remember how something ends.

That means the last few moments of an experience, whether it’s a walk, training session, grooming, or vet visit, can strongly shape how a dog feels about it next time.

Ending on a calm, positive note helps dogs build better associations and feel safer in similar situations in the future. Even short experiences can be meaningful if they finish well.

Sometimes, stopping early is kinder than pushing on.

Why Regular Grooming Between Appointments Matters

Professional grooming plays an important role in your dog’s care, but what happens between appointments matters just as much. Regular at-home grooming helps keep your dog comfortable, healthy, and able to enjoy their grooming sessions.

Grooming isn’t just about appearance. It supports skin health, coat condition, and your dog’s overall well-being.

🐾 Why regular brushing is so important

Between grooms, coats continue to grow, shed, and tangle. Without regular brushing:

* knots and matting can form quickly
* coats can pull on the skin and cause discomfort
* moisture and dirt can get trapped close to the skin
* grooming appointments can become longer and more stressful

A well-maintained coat makes professional grooming calmer, safer, more comfortable for your dog and therefore cheaper for you.

🧵 Different coats need different care

Not all coats are the same, and one brush does not suit every dog.

* Short-coated breeds
Benefit from rubber brushes or soft-bristle brushes
Help remove loose hair and stimulate the skin

* Double-coated breeds
Need regular brushing to remove undercoat
Tools like undercoat rakes or deshedding tools are often used carefully
Skipping maintenance can lead to compacted coat and skin issues

* Long or flowing coats
Require frequent brushing and line brushing techniques
Slicker brushes and metal combs are commonly used
Mats can form quickly if brushing is inconsistent

* Curly or wool coats
Need thorough, regular brushing right down to the skin
Often requires a combination of slicker brushing and combing
Mats can be hidden beneath the surface if not checked properly

✂️ Technique matters too

How you brush is just as important as what you use. Gentle, methodical brushing helps avoid discomfort and teaches dogs to feel safe during handling. Rushing or brushing only the top layer often misses problem areas.

🤝 Support and guidance

Every dog is different, and grooming needs can change with age, coat condition, and lifestyle. If you’re unsure which tools or techniques are right for your dog, I’m always happy to help, advise, and demonstrate what works best for your individual dog.

Regular home grooming supports your dog’s comfort and makes professional grooming a much more positive experience for everyone involved 🐕💛

Did You Know? Dogs Need More Rest Than We Think

Dogs sleep a lot, and for good reason. Rest is essential for their physical health, emotional balance, and ability to cope with everyday life.

Adult dogs often sleep 12–14 hours a day, while puppies and senior dogs can sleep even more. This isn’t laziness, it’s how dogs recover, process experiences, and stay healthy.

Just like people, dogs also benefit from quiet days at home. Not every day needs to be busy or social. Downtime helps dogs reset, especially after walks, visitors, new environments, or exciting events.

Rest days are just as important as active days. Too much stimulation without enough recovery can lead to irritability, restlessness, or stress-related behaviours.

And just like us, dogs have off days. Some days they’re energetic and curious, other days they’re slower or less enthusiastic. This is completely normal and doesn’t mean anything is wrong.

Understanding and respecting a dog’s need for rest helps create calmer, happier dogs who cope better with daily life.

Please show me your sleeping pups 🥰

Why Groomers Have Cancellation & No-Show Fees

When you book a grooming appointment, you’re not just booking a time, you’re booking care, preparation, and dedicated focus for your dog. In a one-on-one grooming environment, each appointment is planned around your dog’s individual needs.

This post is simply here to explain how grooming appointments work behind the scenes and why certain policies exist.

🗓️ Why cancellations matter

When you book an appointment, that time is reserved just for your dog. Unlike many other businesses, a groomer can’t easily fill a last-minute cancellation, particularly when working one-on-one or with dogs that need extra patience.

Late cancellations or no-shows mean:

* lost income for that time slot

* another dog missing out on an appointment

When you book a grooming appointment, you’re not just booking a time; you’re booking care, preparation, and dedicated focus for your dog. In a one-on-one grooming environment, each appointment is planned around your dog’s individual needs.

Cancellation and no-show fees aren’t about punishment, they help make a small grooming business fair, viable, and sustainable.

⚠️ About handling or “danger” fees

Some groomers charge an additional fee for dogs that are difficult, reactive, or unsafe to groom.

👉 I don’t charge a danger fee.

Instead, I work with anxious dogs using a fear-free, training-based approach. This may sometimes mean that a groom is not completed, because a dog’s feelings and emotional wellbeing always come first. Safety is never rushed or forced, calm, positive experiences are prioritised over finishing a groom at all costs.

🤝 Appointment manners that help everyone

Good communication makes a big difference:

giving as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule

arriving on time, or letting me know if you’re running late

being open about your dog’s anxiety, behaviour, or recent changes

understanding that grooming time can vary depending on how your dog is coping

Not every appointment is about a “perfect finish”. Sometimes success simply means a calm, safe experience, and that matters.

🐾 A shared responsibility

The best grooming experiences happen when groomer and owner work together. Mutual respect and clear communication allow me to give your dog the care and patience they deserve.

Thank you to everyone who respects appointment times and understands the realities of running a small, one-on-one grooming business 💛

Cancellation and no-show fees aren’t about punishment; they help make a small grooming business fair, viable, and sustainable.leted, because a dog’s feelings and emotional well-being always come first.
