We are a passionate group of heavy horse enthusiasts committed to preserving and celebrating the legacy of heavy horses in the Braidwood and surrounding regions. Founded with the goal of promoting education, awareness, and participation in heavy horse activities, our Association brings together a community of individuals who share a love for these magnificent animals. Whether you’re an experienced

handler or a first-time exhibitor, we provide a welcoming environment for people of all ages to connect with these gentle giants. Our annual Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show is a cornerstone of our activities, featuring classes for Clydesdales, Shires, and other heavy horse breeds. The Show is not just about competition—it’s a celebration of the role heavy horses have played in our history, from their work on farms to their continued presence in the show ring. In addition to our Show, we are involved in a range of community-focused initiatives aimed at preserving the heritage of heavy horses. We are proud to work closely with local businesses, sponsors, and like-minded organisations to ensure that these majestic horses remain an integral part of the Braidwood community for generations to come. Join us as we continue to grow, educate, and celebrate the strength, beauty, and history of heavy horses. Whether you’re interested in showing, breeding, or simply learning more, the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Association is here to support you.

A huge congratulations to the Thomas Family of Darkmoor Shires & Clydesdales on their outstanding win with Darkmoor Delinda — our 2026 Grand Champion Led Heavy Horse and the proud recipient of the Alma Cup.

Darkmoor Delinda was beautifully presented and a wonderful example of the quality, presence, and tradition celebrated through this award.

🐴What a Show… Thank You! 💛

The 2026 Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show has officially wrapped up, and what an incredible day it was. This year we welcomed:
✨ 1,900+ spectators
🐎 52 horses
🏆 170 classes entered
👥 40 exhibitors

To put that into perspective - there were more people through the gates on show day than the entire population of Braidwood recorded in the 2021 Census. An extraordinary result for our small community and a wonderful reflection of the support behind this event.

As a committee, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the Show possible. A huge thank you to:
💛 Our exhibitors
💛 Our spectators
💛 Our community
💛 Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council
💛 Our generous sponsors
💛 Our demonstrators, trade stands, and vendors
💛 And our incredible judges, stewards and volunteers, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes

This show is built on community, passion, and the shared love of heavy horses - and we couldn’t do it without all of you. Thank you for supporting our event, our region and the traditions that make this place so special.

We can’t wait to welcome you all back next year.
Stay tuned for Save the Date!

🔥🐴 FIREWOOD FOR CAMPING EXHIBITORS! 🐴🔥

It’s looking like a proper Braidwood chilly night and morning… so don’t worry, we’ve got the firewood sorted!

The wonderful Christine and Greg Ellis have spent the past couple of days cutting and splitting a large trailer load of firewood for our camping exhibitors to share on Friday night. Absolute legends. Once you’re set up, make sure you find Christine and Greg and say thank you—they’ll be the ones smiling, laughing, and probably pretending they’re not still sore from all that wood splitting!

Bring your warm coats, gather around the fire, and get ready for a brilliant Show weekend.

🔥 Important reminder:
All campfires must be in drums or containers and supervised at all times.

🐴 HAY PROVIDED FOR ALL EXHIBITORS – 2026 SHOW 🐴
Bringing horses to the Show? You can leave the hay at home—we’ve got you covered!

A huge thank you to Paul Cooper & Lisa Cooper of Oscarville Clydesdale Stud, who have once again generously donated large round bales of quality lucerne hay for all exhibitors to use across the weekend. From settling in the night before to keeping horses comfortable on Show day, this incredible contribution makes a real difference and is just another example of the support within our heavy horse community.

💛 Thank you, Paul & Lisa, for your continued generosity and for helping make the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show such a welcoming experience for exhibitors.

Each Perpetual Trophy at The Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show is more than award—they each carry a story. In that vein, we are proud to introduce a new perpetual trophy for the Champion Turnout Class, generously sponsored by the Ellis Family of Northangera.

The Ellis family’s connection to Braidwood runs deep, with family ties reaching back to the early 1830s through the Chalker/Charker family, and the Mathews family. Today, that connection continues across the family’s properties at Doughboy and Northangera, where they operate the Ahern Shire and Clydesdale Stud.

The trophy itself is a beautiful piece of history. At its centre is an antique sulky lamp, gifted by family friend Frank Grundy, carefully restored by Endangered Heritage Pty Ltd, and mounted on a handcrafted plinth by the Men’s Shed. Together, it brings together local history, skilled restoration, and community craftsmanship.

This new perpetual trophy will recognise the best Harness Turnout exhibit each year, celebrating presentation, tradition, and the enduring role of harness horses in our shared heritage. The 2026 winner will also receive a $200 cash prize.

💛 Thank you to the Ellis family for preserving this piece of history and contributing such a meaningful new tradition to the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show.
