Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show

Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show A Braidwood based show for Clydesdale, Shire and heavy horse breeders and enthusiasts. All welcome! Welcome to the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Association!

We are a passionate group of heavy horse enthusiasts committed to preserving and celebrating the legacy of heavy horses in the Braidwood and surrounding regions. Founded with the goal of promoting education, awareness, and participation in heavy horse activities, our Association brings together a community of individuals who share a love for these magnificent animals. Whether you’re an experienced

handler or a first-time exhibitor, we provide a welcoming environment for people of all ages to connect with these gentle giants. Our annual Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show is a cornerstone of our activities, featuring classes for Clydesdales, Shires, and other heavy horse breeds. The Show is not just about competition—it’s a celebration of the role heavy horses have played in our history, from their work on farms to their continued presence in the show ring. In addition to our Show, we are involved in a range of community-focused initiatives aimed at preserving the heritage of heavy horses. We are proud to work closely with local businesses, sponsors, and like-minded organisations to ensure that these majestic horses remain an integral part of the Braidwood community for generations to come. Join us as we continue to grow, educate, and celebrate the strength, beauty, and history of heavy horses. Whether you’re interested in showing, breeding, or simply learning more, the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Association is here to support you.

WOW - What A Day!!

We are so grateful to everyone who played a part in making the second Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show a massive success.

With over 600 spectators, over 40 horses entered with 36 horses participating in friendly competitions and demonstrations, trade stalls, great food and glorious weather, it was a fantastic day.

A small team is at the heart of this event, but it takes many more hands to make it happen. We appreciate every contribution, big or small. The BDHHA committee would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in the show. They include…

Our judges Matt Trewin, Kylie Sercombe & Suz Worsley-Deacon - thank you for generously sharing your knowledge with us.

John Sercombe - announcer and ringmaster extraordinaire. Thank you for doing two jobs at once, keeping everything running smoothly and entertaining the crowd.

Our stewards Jillian Atkinson & Joanna - you two did a wonderful job assisting our judges and recording results. Thank you.

Di Walker, Leanne Arthur & Karen Yaldren for spending all day in the office handling paperwork and selling raffle tickets.

Gate keeper Rose Carpenter, thank you for greeting our spectators so warmly.

To Braidwood Pony Club & Coffee By K - thank you for keeping everyone fed and caffeinated. We heard plenty of positive feedback about great quality food.

The 355 Committee and Braidwood Pony Club - thank you for making a new event welcome and sharing fabulous facilities and gear with us. We received plenty of positive feedback on how wonderful the grounds are - it’s a beautiful spot and our exhibitors particularly loved the incredibly hot showers.

Casanova’s Braidwood for a lovely exhibitors dinner on Friday night. It was a big order but you worked with us to make it happen and everyone loved the pizzas.

Matt Arthur-Ellis & AE Photography & Design - thank you for a long day on your feet capturing stunning images for everyone. We’ve had a few sneak peeks and the show album is going to be beautiful.

To those who provided entertainment and information to our spectators - you bring so much to the event and we appreciate your skill and generosity.

Mahbrook Carriage Supplies
Riding With Sticks - Archery Demo Team - Rodney, Liberty & Deb
Cammy Gray - Farrier
Heavy Horse Heaven
Concours d’Elegance Demo - Sally Jones

To our exhibitors - most of whom are friends because the heavy horse community is a small one. Thank you for coming along and creating the kind of friendly competition that’s a pleasure to be a part of. You’re an amazing group of people and we are grateful for your support.

To our spectators - we hope you enjoyed the day. Thank you for coming out to see what we’re doing and we hope to welcome you again next year.

To our incredibly generous sponsors - this event would not be possible without your support. Thank you for getting behind a new event and helping us make it one not to be missed.

Finally, we’d like to confirm we’ll be back again on Saturday 9th May, 2026!!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! 📣
💛 Vale Darkmoor Da Vinci 🖤

Da Vinci was a magnificent gelding - he and owner Sally Jones have been incredible ambassadors for the heavy horse breeds. 🌟

Sadly, Da Vinci recently passed away. It’s a loss that will be felt by many, thanks to his playful personality and love of people. Sally asked us to create an award she could sponsor in Da Vinci’s memory. 🏆

We are honoured to introduce the Darkmoor da Vinci Perpetual Trophy for Best Gelding at the 2025 Show. We’re working on creating a beautiful trophy, which won’t be ready to present this year, but will have the first winner’s name engraved on it. 🌟

All geldings are eligible to compete for Best Gelding. The winner will receive a commemorative medallion and $200 to take home. 💵🏅

We’re excited to welcome and thank our two incredible judges for their time and expertise this weekend! Your knowledge and passion for heavy horses are truly appreciated. See below for their bios!

🌟Matthew Trewin - Ring 1 Judge 📣
Matthew Trewin is a Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society Panel Judge, and the current principal of Lavereen Stud, which at over 100 is the oldest continually running Clydesdale horse stud in Australia. The art silos at Goorambat pay tribute to the stud.

When Matthew’s father Graeme took over running the stud at 18 years of age, the district was still home to many Clydesdale drawn harvesters. Both the Trewin family and stud histories are littered with notable human and horse achievements as far back as the 1880’s. Matthew’s great-great-great grandfather won Champion Mare and Champion Stallion at Melbourne Royal in 1881 and 1883 respectively. Those trophies are still displayed in the Trewin family home. As late as the 1950’s, the family farm was being actively worked by a dozen horses on a daily basis.

Matthew has a lifetime of experience breeding, showing and working heavy horses, as well as a distinguished judging career that includes both Sydney and Melbourne Royal shows.

🌟Kylie Sercombe - Ring 2 Judge 📣
Kylie has been involved with heavy horses for many years and has shown great commitment to the community, particularly through her role as Secretary of St Heliers Heavy Horse Field Days. Her hands-on experience with Clydesdales has given her a deep understanding of these magnificent horses, particularly in the working classes, where their strength and skills are showcased.

Kylie's interest in Clydesdales started when she was young, with her Grandfather caring for pit ponies in the Hunter Valley back in the day! Kylie’s passion for Clydesdales drives her to not only care for and work with these remarkable horses but also to share their legacy with others.

SHOW UPDATE - HAY PROVIDED FOR ALL EXHIBITORS!

Coming to the show with horses? Leave your hay at home - we’ve got you covered. 🌿

Paul & Lisa Cooper of Oscarville Clydesdale Stud, who also grow beautiful hay, have very generously donated several large round bales of lucerne hay for all of our exhibitors to feed their horses on show day (and the night before!). 🙌💚

How great is that? Just one more reason to love exhibiting at the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show. 🐴
