❗ H5N1 Bird Flu Update: ❗

There has been one case of H5N1 confirmed in a bird found in NSW within the last few weeks and several in other parts of Australia.

Though no cases have yet been confirmed in humans or cats, this disease does have the potential to infect both. Northside Vet Centre would like to inform the Canberra community on the steps that should be taken to ensure you and your pets stay safe.

If you find a bird that appears unwell, please do not attempt to bring it to a clinic. Instead:

🚫 Avoid touching or moving the bird to prevent disease spread.

📝 Take note of time, date, and location of the sighting

📷 Record photo or video if safe to do so

📞 Contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline (1800 675 888).

If you find a bird that is injured but does not look to be unwell in any other way, please contact ACT Wildlife (0432 300 033) for their advice prior to engaging. If a bird is advised to be brought into a clinic, NVC or otherwise, please phone first so the team can appropriately prepare and instruct you where to wait outside. Birds should not be brought into the building.

❗ FOR CAT OWNERS ❗

While the risk of H5N1 affecting cats is currently low in Canberra, there is a small risk to cats that eat a raw diet (including raw pet food) and cats with access to birds outdoors. During this period, it is safest that you:

🍗 Switch your cats to a diet of cooked/pasteurised food ONLY.

📦 Contain cats with access to birds or wildlife.

🐓 Keep cats away from poultry and livestock.

🧼 Wash hands thoroughly after handling animals with outdoor access.

A huge thank you to the very generous Northside Vet community who donated to the Vinnies CEO Sleepout. We were lucky - last Thursday evening was MUCH warmer than this week! It's cold and uncomfortable sleeping on cardboard on concrete. However, the really tough thing about this evening is that the support and connection with fellow sleep- outers (especially my team Women Building Change) really brings home how hard it is for those without support and connection facing homelessness. There are 1777 people in ACT currently experiencing homelessness; Vinnies provides crucial connection and support to help these people. Veterinary Appreciation Day takes place on June 18th. It is a day dedicated to honoring the incredible work and dedication of veterinary professionals worldwide. From treating your beloved pets to safeguarding animal welfare, every individual in the veterinary field plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and happiness of your fur children.

Here at NVC we are very lucky to be shown so much appreciation everyday by our wonderful clients, as showcased by our thank you wall, and the seemingly endless snacks that we get to enjoy.

Today the team took a quick break to savour this delicious charcuterie board.

Northside Vet Centre have been involved with Pets in the Park for many years, helping care for pets living on the streets with their owners. This Thursday, our very own Dr Libby is participating in 2026 Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise all-important funds to help Vinnies fight homelessness. Libby will be sleeping rough on concrete - and she hates the cold! This is Vinnies largest annual fundraiser and helps thousands of people in need across Australia year round.
