🐾🌷 Happy Dogs Day Out at Floriade this Sunday! Keep your four-legged friends safe. 🌷🐾

Floriade is a beautiful place to enjoy the flowers with your furry best friend, but it’s important to remember that flowers can be poisonous to dogs. 🌷⚠️

While those colourful blooms might be tempting to sniff, nibble or dig up, some flowers - including tulips - contain toxic compounds that can make your dog sick.

🐶 Here are a few simple tips to keep your pup safe:
🌷 Keep dogs on a lead and away from flower beds.
🚫 Don’t let your dog chew or eat tulips, other flowers or plant material.
👀 Keep a close eye on curious noses, especially around garden beds.
💧 Bring fresh water and take regular breaks to keep your dog comfortable.
🐕 Keep an eye out for dropped food and other hazards in busy areas.

⚠️ Think your dog has eaten a tulip? Contact a vet promptly for advice, even if your dog seems fine.

Gretchen and Willow are ready for flea and tick season, are you? If you are planning a coast trip on the horizon, please don’t forget your parasite prevention - paralysis ticks are life threatening to our furry friends and keeping up with prevention is the best way to minimise the risk.

Did you know we have an annual injection option for flea and tick prevention? We have been offering this treatment in-clinic for a year now and have been impressed with the results. If you struggle remembering monthly chews (like some of our staff 😅), why not book in for an appointment?

Yesterday we celebrated a double milestone - 6 months since we welcomed both Dr Chang and nurse Pauline to our team. Both have fast become invaluable members of the NVC family. We are very lucky to have them with us!

❗ H5N1 Bird Flu Update: ❗

There has been one case of H5N1 confirmed in a bird found in NSW within the last few weeks and several in other parts of Australia.

Though no cases have yet been confirmed in humans or cats, this disease does have the potential to infect both. Northside Vet Centre would like to inform the Canberra community on the steps that should be taken to ensure you and your pets stay safe.

If you find a bird that appears unwell, please do not attempt to bring it to a clinic. Instead:

🚫 Avoid touching or moving the bird to prevent disease spread.

📝 Take note of time, date, and location of the sighting

📷 Record photo or video if safe to do so

📞 Contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline (1800 675 888).

If you find a bird that is injured but does not look to be unwell in any other way, please contact ACT Wildlife (0432 300 033) for their advice prior to engaging. If a bird is advised to be brought into a clinic, NVC or otherwise, please phone first so the team can appropriately prepare and instruct you where to wait outside. Birds should not be brought into the building.

❗ FOR CAT OWNERS ❗

While the risk of H5N1 affecting cats is currently low in Canberra, there is a small risk to cats that eat a raw diet (including raw pet food) and cats with access to birds outdoors. During this period, it is safest that you:

🍗 Switch your cats to a diet of cooked/pasteurised food ONLY.

📦 Contain cats with access to birds or wildlife.

🐓 Keep cats away from poultry and livestock.

🧼 Wash hands thoroughly after handling animals with outdoor access.
