The theme of this year 2026 Upper Hunter Horse Festival is “Breeding Brillance”. Scone as Horse Capital of Australia, has in the past, and is still breeding some of Australia’s finest horses, many who have excelled on the international stage.
This is a philosophy Haydon Horse Stud has throughly endorsed and has been put into practiced continuously from right back at the start, in the early days from 1832.
The policy has always been to breed from the best mares then from her best daughter, then her best daughter to best daughter right through to today’s horses. This practiced has been ingrained into each generation of the Haydon family and enforced by strict culling.
It is based on the theory that the female lines are 80% of breeding. These strong mare lines are illustrated by Hall of Fame International mare Haydon Angel Jewel. Her female Jewel Family started with the top mare Countess who was renowned for chasing brumbies back in then early colonial times. Her daughter by Midnight’s sire Tester, Bangle was Bernard Haydon’s mare best. Then followed the top mares Locket, Necklace, Bracelet, Jewel, Trinket, to Emerald who played Test matches for Australia to Angel Jewel who is the only horse in history to win every major tournament in the world. Angel Jewel’s daughter’s bred in Argentina are now following in her international footsteps. Her full sister Tourmaline is the dam of Victoriana who played the Argentine Open, stallion Oracle who stands in the UK and to top mare Sky Jewel by Ellerston Solar whose daughter Chanel played in the recent Ellerston high goal. She now represents the 11th generation of this family.
Haydon Illusion ridden in this year’s parade also stems from Countess and Bangle through another branch of the Jewel Family through Trinket to Topaz, a stand out mare of her generation, drafting at the Sydney RAS in 1937, to Sapphire, then Ruby, to Dark Jewel who played Test matches, Dream Jewel by Drawn, Mirage by Nat Buchanan winner Haydon Dancer to Illusion today as the 10th generation.
