David Mech also realised his mistake by mixing wolves from different family lines in the same enclosure for this older, disproven study, which caused excess conflict and an over exaggeration of “dominant” behaviours.

Our own dogs are often fluid in which resources or situations they decide to stand their ground with. Just like humans can be.

A lot of behaviours in modern dogs are mislabeled as “dominance” due to theories spinning off from this flawed study, leading to confusing and unfair standards for our dogs and punishment for natural, harmless behaviours.

Did you know that the senior research scientist David Mech, whose book into hierarchy in wolf packs created the 'alpha theory' idea, then went on to disprove his own work with a later more naturalistic study? 😮

Although wolves and domestic dogs are worlds apart nowadays, David Mech's original book on captive wolves is still used regularly as evidence for alpha-based and dominance training styles. Touting you need to act like a wolf and an alpha and put your dog in their place so they respect you. However, even if domestic dogs and wolves were closer in how they acted than they are, David Mech went on to do further research and instead found that rather than one domineering 'alpha' wolves actually work as a family group with the parents leading the pack. That doesn't sound that far off our human families really does it? In fact, despite what 'alpha theory' states in regards to an 'alpha' wolf always eating first, in reality wolf parents often feed their youngest, most vulnerable offspring first.

The issue with the first study the book used is it was based on captive wolves and not wild wolves and how they behaved in their natural habitat, once David Mech realised his mistakes he did more research, and with new understanding and data he has since gone on to try and repair the damage his original study has done in how we view wolves, and by extension dogs. This is what scientific study is about, updating with the times and the most up to date information. I give huge props to David Mech for instead of trying to save his ego and stick to what he said in his original work, he has followed the science and admitted the flaws of his original study, bringing new knowledge and research forward.

It is a shame that the original idea is still so prevalent in our cultural knowledge and understanding of wolves, whereas the later study is less well known to the masses. I can only hope that will also change over time by us bringing the more up to date information to the forefront. 🐺

Please be aware there is a huge Parvo outbreak in Blackwater right now.

If you have a puppy who hasn’t completed their vaccination schedule yet safe socialisation and habituation methods are available, for example having them in the car observing the world and gaining positive associations through treats, lickimats and encouragement that loud noises etc are nothing to be worried about. YouTube videos for noise exposure and more much.

There’s ways to exposure our puppies during that critical social period (4-16weeks) which is so very important, without putting them at risk.

If you have a young pup at home also be aware of what you can bring in on your shoes, if you go to the dog park with your older dogs take your shoes off before entering the home.

If you’re unsure if your dog or pup are covered contact your vet and if you’d like advice on the best way to still give your pups exposure to the world without exposing them to potential disease risks or taking them outside the home/car please reach out.

As an ex veterinary nurse and behavioural nerd I’m always happy to advise on meeting in the middle when it comes to social exposure and disease control which are both so very crucial for your dogs wellbeing

🚨 IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT PARVO 🚨

At Maraboon Vet Surgery, we want to remind all pet owners to be vigilant during the current parvovirus outbreak in Central Highlands. We’ve seen an increase in positive cases especially in the Blackwater area.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping your dog up-to-date with their vaccinations. We would recommend keeping your puppies indoors and restricted from the yard until they’ve had at least their first two vaccinations. Until your puppy has completed their puppy vaccination schedule in full, DO NOT take your dogs to the dog park, beach, dam, garden and other public areas.

If you notice symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy, contact us immediately. Let’s work together to keep our pets safe! 🐾

We are here to help you and your pets, feel free to reach out with any concerns or questions on 4987 6800.

Today is the last day to enter for your chance to win a $100 voucher!

Did you want to win a $100 Voucher to celebrate the opening of the new store location at 3 Arnold Street, Blackwater?

We are running a competition and trying to keep it as stress free as possible.

So no need to share, tag etc. unless you want to

Instead, send us in a photo of your pet enjoying an MS Pet Services product, it doesn’t have to be a treat, it could be a stylish collar or new dog tag.

We will then make a post with all entries and whoever’s photo gets the most likes within 3 days will win the voucher 🙂

I’ve posted some examples below of great photos showing off the products, some extra tips are:

- Good lighting
- Nice background
- Have your pet looking at the camera or with a clear shot of the treat/product
- Taking the photo at their level tends to make for a better photo but as you can see with photo 1 of beautiful Luna, it’s not always essential
- Action shots are also always a hit

Good luck! Entries for the competition opens as of now and will close at 9am Monday morning.

By entering the competition you’re allowing MS Pet Services to use your photos for future marketing

Anyone who’s photos I’ve used in this post, you’re still free to use these in the competition.
