Training Tip Tuesday. Canter Leg Yield.
Begin in right lead canter at A and travel through the corner. Come onto the diagonal line and ride to X in the large ring (to quarter line or a stride past quarter line in the 20x40 ring). Then leg yield the horse back to the rail and travel through the corner. You should find that the final corner is much better balanced.

Yes, we realize that the upper and lower images are different. In the small ring, we will not go completely to X unless the horse is more advanced because the return to the rail would be too steep to maintain balance and rhythm for the less advanced horse.

This is an amazing exercise to help the horse become more balanced in the canter. It helps to develop expression by "freeing"/lifting the inside shoulder and increasing range of motion. It also helps to improve coordination and increase the carrying capacity of the hindquarter as the horse has to engage in order to lift and propel himself sideways. The rider should notice that the horse is more connected to the outside rein and moving nicely off the inside leg without rushing.

The Downs Arabian Club is excited to announce that the schedules are now available for both the Top of the Range Arabian Event and the Queensland Arabian Saddle Horse of the Year shows.

Being held on 11th - 12th October at Gatton Showgrounds, these two events are not to be missed!
