📖 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘄𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗞𝟵 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟳 - 𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 - 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀

After sharing the stories of our founding crew - Neville, Blossom, Bob, Wilma, Nudgie, and Nelson, I couldn’t help but reflect on all the other incredible dogs who’ve been part of our journey.

We've had the privilege of fostering and minding so many dogs. Names like Mack, Bud, Ringo, Tilly, Tigger, Argo, Mira, Dough, Sam, Jack, Milo, Noodle, Gnocchi, Spaghetti, and Ravioli instantly bring back memories and the kind of lessons you can’t learn from a textbook.

Then there are our client dogs, the everyday heroes of Pawsitive K9 Behaviour. Every reactive bark, shy glance, playful bow, or quiet moment of trust has shaped us into the trainers and humans we are today.

As much as I love to study, research, and learn from some of the best minds in dog behaviour, the truth is this:

There are no better teachers than dogs.
Every dog we meet has shaped us, challenged us, and reminded us of life’s simplest truths:

These are the lessons that have built our mission at PK9B:

𝗧𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 “𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴” 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿.

This is a tribute to 𝘢𝘭𝘭 dogs. Thank you for being our greatest teachers, our companions, and our inspiration. We are better humans because of you.❤️

𝗔 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗞𝟵𝗕

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟲 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 🧩.

Nelson is the youngest member of our crew and without a doubt, the cheekiest.

He came into our lives as a foster puppy. The plan was simple: give him a safe place until he found his forever home. We even had his first meet-and-greet lined up with a potential family… but it just didn’t feel right. And, true to our history with “foster fails,” Nelson stayed.

From the beginning, Nelson was fearless, full of mischief, and bursting with life. He was loud, a little crackly, and completely unfiltered, but once he made friends with the other dogs, he became the best adventure buddy we could ever ask for.

His arrival brought our crew full circle. Big Nev had passed his wisdom to Blossom. Blossom mentored Bob. Bob helped guide Nudgie. And then Nelson came along - a spark of pure energy. He connected our crew in a way that made everything feel complete.

He quickly became the glue between them all - playing with Bob, teasing Blossom, cuddling up with Wilma, and encouraging Nudgie to embrace joy and movement. He has a natural way of lifting spirits and reminding us all to be present and playful.

He is the born adventurer of our crew, always leading the way on bush walks and finding the fun in every corner of life.
Nelson is still young and strong-willed, and he continues to grow into himself. He’s the living proof that a dog can be both a whirlwind and a blessing - a daily reminder that joy doesn’t come from perfection, but from connection, freedom, and fun.

Our life wouldn’t be half as bright without him. And like every dog who came before him, he carries a piece of Big Nev’s legacy forward - boldly, joyfully, and unapologetically. ❤️

𝗔 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗞𝟵𝗕

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟱 - 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗲, 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘆!

I first met Nudgie during a private consultation. He was frozen with fear, shut down, and completely overwhelmed. I had never seen a dog so deeply worried. He couldn’t respond, couldn’t engage, and his whole body radiated stress.

I gave his caregivers a gentle training plan and tips to build his confidence, but a week later, when I checked in, nothing had changed. They were ready to surrender him. I couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Sure enough, at the next check-in, his caregivers said they had planned to surrender him to the RSPCA. My heart sank. I called the RSPCA straight away and said, “He’s coming with me.”

The first steps with Nudgie were slow and full of patience. It took 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 for him to step out of my van. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 before he put a paw inside the house. We even camped outside for the first few nights, just to show him we meant no harm.

It took 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 before Nudgie could comfortably wear a harness. He was extremely sensitive to touch and hyper-aware of his environment. Slowly, through patience, space, and observation, he began to trust.

Fast forward to today, and Nudgie has blossomed. He loves adventures, walks like a dream on a lead, and now leans into grooming sessions like they’re a day at the spa. He’s our quiet protector and one of the most loving dogs I’ve known. Together, our beautiful dogs teach and comfort one another in ways only dogs can. 🐾

But here’s the truth: he still struggles in crowds and takes time to warm up to new people. And that’s okay. Not every dog needs to be moulded into someone else’s idea of perfect.
He has taught me to focus on trust and connection, and to give them the gift of simply letting them be.
We love our Golden Boy!

🚫🐺 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 🐾✨

For decades, dog training advice has revolved around “dominance.”
💬 Be the alpha.
💬 Show them who’s boss.
💬 They’re trying to take over the pack.

It’s based on pack theory: the belief that dogs are always trying to climb a strict hierarchy, just like wolves. But science says… ❌ That’s not how dogs work.

Pack theory became popular in the 1970s after studies on captive wolves 🐺👑 suggested rigid hierarchies. The problem? Those wolves were unrelated and forced together in unnatural conditions.

In the wild, wolf packs are actually family units. They cooperate, care for pups, and lead through guidance, not fear. And even if wolves were all about dominance (they’re not), dogs aren’t wolves. Thousands of years of domestication 🏠 have changed their behaviour, communication, and social structures.

Modern science tells us:
🐕 Dogs aren’t plotting to overthrow you
🐾 Most “bad” behaviour comes from fear, stress, or unmet needs
💬 Trust > intimidation

The trouble with dominance-based training? It often uses force, intimidation, and punishment, which leads to 😨 fear, 🤐 suppressed communication, and 💔 broken trust.

What works instead?
✅ Meeting needs (food 🍖, rest 🛌, play 🧩)
✅ Positive reinforcement 🎯
✅ Clear, consistent communication 🗣️
✅ Learning to read body language 👀🐾

🚨 New Research Alert: Neutering Age & Cruciate Disease Risk 🚨

Did you know the timing of your dog’s spay/neuter could affect their risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CrCLD) — one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs?

🐾 A brand-new peer-reviewed study (20,590 dogs!) found:
✨ Dogs neutered very early (minimal lifetime hormone exposure) had the highest risk of cruciate disease.
✨ Risk decreased steadily until about 2.9 years in females and 2.2 years in males.
✨ After that, the risk plateaued.

This doesn’t mean there’s a one-size-fits-all answer. It does mean that when it comes to spaying/neutering, timing matters — and the conversation with your vet should go beyond “yes or no.”

👩‍⚕️💬 What this research tells us:
✔️ Early neutering can increase joint disease risk.
✔️ Later neutering may reduce that risk.
✔️ Each dog’s breed, lifestyle, and health need to be factored in.

She joined our family as a beautiful greyhound, rescued straight from the track, and she has been the embodiment of grace and gratitude ever since.

Wilma is our easiest, most laid-back soul. She’s perfectly content with the simple things in life: a juicy bone, a short adventure, a quick sprint, and a long, luxurious nap. Add a cuddle to the mix, and she’s living her absolute best life.

Wilma is adored by everyone she meets. She accepts others exactly as they are - never judging, always kind. She’s a lover, not a fighter, and she reminds us every single day that true joy lives in life’s quiet, simple moments. ❤️

To us, she’s more than just the princess, she’s the heart-warming, snuggly glue that holds our crew together. 🐾
