🐾 CINDY’S COURAGEOUS JOURNEY 🐾

Meet Cindy, a beautiful Kelpie X who’s been one of our bravest patients at Riverland Vets.

Back in January, Cindy came to see us with a swelling and lameness in her front leg. X-rays revealed some changes to the bone, these are bone lesions. To find out more, Dr Nicole performed a bone biopsy, which was sent to specialist pathologists in Adelaide.

The results confirmed osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
🦴 What is osteosarcoma?
It’s an aggressive bone cancer that most commonly affects the limbs of larger breed dogs. It can cause pain, swelling, and has a high risk of spreading to other parts of the body.

To stop the cancer from spreading, Cindy had her leg amputated within the week. She bounced back beautifully and took it all in her stride (literally!).

Our next step was chemotherapy. Dr Nicole and Dr Hammond worked closely with specialist veterinary oncologists to create the best treatment plan for Cindy.

💛 And today, we’re so happy to share that after 6 rounds of chemo, Cindy has officially finished her treatment!

She’s been strong and full of spirit every step of the way, supported by her incredibly dedicated and loving owners. We’re so proud of how far she’s come, and honoured to have been part of her journey.

📸 We’ve also attached one of Cindy’s original X-rays to show what we mean when we say bone lesions – these are the abnormal areas that raised concern and led us to investigate further.

Go Cindy! 🐶✨

🐾let’s talk Arthritis 🐾
Arthritis is a very common disease that becomes more noticeable during winter. Now that the weather continues to reach freezing here in the Riverland, is your furry family member slowing down or finding it harder to move around?
Research has shown that animals from as young as 3 years old can start developing arthritis! Whilst symptoms might not be as easily visible, there are certainly ways to help reduce inflammation and help keep those joints moving.
Did you know that cats also get arthritis too?!
Symptoms may include (but not limited to):
- Limping/lameness
- Difficulty getting up/vocalising (don’t we all?!)
- Stiffness
- Reluctance to move /exercise
- Licking/chewing at joints
- Loss of muscle (especially in the back legs)
We’re here to help your pets feel their best, so they don’t have to suffer with the symptoms of arthritis. 🐶🐱
There are many things available to support pets with arthritis, including:
- Prescription medications to reduce inflammation and pain
- Courses of injections to help slow/ manage arthritis progression/ pain
- Nutrition and weight loss plans and advice
- Laser therapy
- Natural joint supplements that you can buy over the counter
Let’s help keep your pet comfortable during the cooler months. Give our team a call on 8582 1222 to book an appointment, or pop in to see our range of products.

🐾 Why Microchipping Your Cat in South Australia is a Total Game-Changer! 🐾

Did you know microchipping your furry friend isn’t just a good idea—it’s actually required by law in South Australia? Yep, if your pet is a dog or cat, the Government states they must be microchipped and registered before they turn 12 weeks old or within 28 days of moving into SA.

But why else do we 100% recommend microchipping? Here’s the scoop:

✅ Instant ID: If your pet ever gets out and goes on an unexpected adventure, a microchip helps shelters and vets quickly identify them and get them back home safely.
✅ Peace of Mind: No more stressing about lost pets! With a microchip, there’s a way to trace your beloved companion no matter what.
✅ Legal Compliance: Avoid fines and penalties by staying on top of the law. It’s a simple step that protects your pet and keeps you compliant.
✅ More Than Just a Tag: Unlike collars or tags, which can fall off or get lost, a microchip is a permanent form of ID implanted just under the skin. Safe, painless, and super effective!

💔 A Difficult Reality in the Riverland
Local councils are working hard to manage the cat population in the Riverland, and as a result, we’re seeing more and more stray cats being brought into our clinic. Sadly, some of these cats appear to be well cared for and could have homes — but without proper identification, the reality of keeping other animals & wildlife safe is also important.

This situation takes a real emotional toll on our team, who are faced with these heartbreaking ordeals every day. It’s a reminder of just how vital microchipping is in ensuring your pet is protected.

✨ You can help make a difference. Microchipping is a simple, effective way to make sure your pet can always be identified — and spared from the unknown. It is a once off needle that lasts a lifetime!

At Riverland Vet, we offer quick and easy microchipping services because we believe every pet deserves safety, security, and the best chance at staying out of harm’s way. ❤️

📅 Book an appointment with us today — protecting your pet starts with a chip. 🐶🐱

On Sunday, cheeky Pedro the horse decided to go on a little adventure — right up the ramp to his owner's house!
Unfortunately, his curiosity got the better of him when he slipped and became badly stuck in the fence.

Thanks to the quick response of our wonderful vet Dr. Simone, along with the incredible efforts of the Riverland SES and CFS teams, and everyone else involved Pedro was safely sedated and carefully lifted to safety using a crane. Dr. Simone then stitched him up on-site while he remained under sedation.

We're happy to report that Pedro is now on the mend and in good spirits!

A huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped during this emergency — it truly took a team effort, and we're so grateful for the support of our local services.
