HOW RED THE NED SHOULD BE FED

I was running early (... for a change!) this morning, so had the time to elaborate on the desired diet for 26yo gelding, Red, who has already lost quite a few molars to age.

In the absence of his wife Lea, who loves Red heaps, the very congenial Mick (Daniher) was keen to video proceedings, in which case I had to overcome my chronic shyness to front the camera.

Please note that the audible wind was nature generated ..... and not P. Lane generated. 😒

A RELAXING DAY AT THE OR***CE

My recently appointed “apprentice” dentist, 15yo Tyler May, sure has a relaxing effect on his future patients.

This afternoon, he weaved his magic on two very wilful and potentially combative horses, turning their mindset around within a matter of minutes with some methodical pre-treatment massage and reassurance techniques.

The horse seen here, Rosco, was a reasonably relaxed dude to start with, but I reckon he was snoring soon after Tyler’s introduction of the first dental rasp.

NEFERTITI’s “NASTY” INCISORS

The 9yo mare, Nefertiti (featured in the earlier video), has a dental abnormality called inverted parrot-mouth.

Unlike the far more common scenario where the upper incisors of a horse protrude well beyond the corresponding lower incisors (generally caused by an underdeveloped lower jaw at birth) …… Nefertiti was born with a lower jaw (mandible) which was over-developed in comparison to her upper jaw (maxilla).

As a consequence of her longer lower jaw, her lower incisors were positioned forward of her upper ones, making proper occlusion impossible.

Luckily for Nefertiti she is in the very caring hands of Jan Moore, who tends to her special needs and feeds her appropriately …. because in the wild, she would have had a substantially shortened lifespan.

As Nefe was fully matured went I first encountered her …. and her dental defect was well and truly established ….. it is just a matter of reducing her lower incisors as necessary to facilitate her prehension of paddock grasses and other fibres.

By the look of her extremely healthy and robust condition today, I’m tipping Nefe is eating pretty damn fine !

The attached pics are before and after I reduced and aligned her lower incisors.
